"Ordered flowers for my mom, to be delivered tomorrow to the inpatient physical therapy centre where she's rehabilitating her hip after replacement surgery." could be the bullet-proof solution. A bit verbose, but I can't see how anyone could ascribe a negative connotation to it.

Also, good luck to your mom. I hope she recovers quickly.

Yay! Also, if you're enjoying Little Women, you might also enjoy both the follow-ons (about Jo and her family) and Eight Cousins (and Rose in Bloom). The latter two are books that make me inordinately happy, but you have to stop reading right before the last chapter of Rose in Bloom. It's important. :) (though really this means you will read it then say "oh yeah. I should have stopped reading)
