Cranberries, Raspberries and Strawberries

My cranberry, raspberries and strawberry plants arrived just before we went away for Easter, so I didn't get a chance to plant them out before we went. Not wanting to leave them in their plastic bags too much longer I planted the cranberry and the strawberries out on Tuesday night, lighter evenings are good for that sort of thing ( Read more... )

By coincidence, our blueberry has arrived today, and I'm also thinking of trying a few bilberries. I don't know why, though; we never succeed with fruit.

Veg are okay, though, which is why I have some hopes for the seed potatoes that arrived yesterday.

I want to get blueberries too, but I'm waiting for a special offer from the company, they always do several each year, making me not want to buy at full price :-) I'd like bilberries too, picking them from the garden is a lot easier than scouring the fells for them.

Of course none of my stuff may fruit, but I'm starting off optomistic :-) We've decided to go for the more unusual veg so we can still support our very good local greengrocer. So we decided not to go for things like potatoes, onions, carrots etc. but I was eyeing up blue potatoes and deep red carrots, so maybe next year...

Mmmmm - many strawberries....

My blueberry is actually flowering this year for the first time in ages. If it doesn't set, my suspicions about its supposed self-fertility will be confirmed...

I'm not actually all that fond of strawberries myself, I really prefer raspberries given a choice. However I got these ones free with the other things I bought, so felt obliged to plant them. If the birds don't get them I will eat them though, they're nicest with sugar, black pepper and balsamic vinegar sprinkled over :-)

We never had much luck with the blueberries we tried to grow in N'cle, they never seemed to flower. I do have my suspicions that it was just too cold for them up their though.

Black pepper and balsamic vinegar I've tried, but not sugar as well.

"A new pleasure! A new pleasure!"
