She had brought two cups of tea.

Hikaru gratefully took one from her, his gloved hand slipping about the white Styrofoam, lightly brushing against her own gloved hand. Akari promised herself not to blush and sat next to him, now cradling her own cup in both her hands.

“Thanks,” he said, immediately taking a small sip from it. He grimaced slightly and she couldn’t be sure if it was from its taste or hotness.

“They didn’t have hot cocoa,” she repeated.

“I know.” His lips were drawn back and he was breathing in quick sharp bursts, sending white mist rolling out onto the cold air. Too hot, then. “When do the fireworks begin?”

“Ten minutes.” There was a distance between them and she sighed. “You didn’t have to come.”

“You asked me to.” As if he hadn’t had a thought in his head to refuse when she knew better. “Stop being so . . . so . . .” now his free hand waved in the air as he searched for the right word and when he found it, he clenched his fist in triumph, “apologetic! It’s not like we’re on a date or something.”

Right. Her oldest friend had always been dense and he never saw the obvious; what she wanted him to see. Not that she expected him to ever fall into her arms saying ‘I love you’. She could wish but the distance between them wouldn’t stop growing. She blew at the steam rising from her cup.

“Hey, is that Touya?” Hikaru was standing, all of his attention suddenly focused on a solitary figure some distance from them. “I wonder what he’s doing here.”

There were some things she couldn’t fight and this was one of them. “Hikaru,” she said before her thoughts had a chance to catch up with her mouth, “he looks cold. Take him my tea. I haven’t taken a drink, yet. I’ll just get another one, okay?”

He took it from her and something changed in the way he looked at her. “Akari -”

“It’s fine! I’ll join both of you after I grab another tea.”

Part of her was relieved when he turned to walk towards the other boy, not fighting her for once, but another part of her was disappointed. She shook it off.

Somewhere in her heart she knew that some distances could never be crossed.
