Chapter 9

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Woohyun whined blatantly, covering his face with hands as he watched the two officers- who he still haven’t learned what their names are yet, wrap duck tape onto his bottom left leg, right above his ankle, which came with a tracking device. It was tightly woven around his skin and he had the urge to itch it, however, the tall guy kept moving his hands aside and even pulled his leg up in the most awkward position ever.

“A-ahh! Ow! No, stop- “

“Oh, shut up.” The other officer said, a smile etching at the corner of his mouth and Woohyun had no choice but to hold it in.

Technically, he wouldn’t be in this sort of situation if he didn’t agree with working along the police and their squad teams with what he knew about the drug at hand.

“Put another roll on him.” Sunggyu demanded, holding onto the other’s shoulder, who wailed at the fact that there would be more tape usage.

It wasn’t long when Woohyun had punched Sunggyu, square on the cheek and now covered with some bandages and an ice pack held against it.

Unfortunately because of his outburst, Sunggyu had retaliated in mere seconds and Woohyun found himself with a bloody nose. Though, all was over when Sunggyu confessed that he needed Woohyun, not for finding the drug, but because he thought they could actually achieve their dream this time.

This time to avenge Woohyun’s father.

Even though Woohyun knew that wasn’t entirely the purpose of it, as much as he didn’t want to admit it, he actually needed the information provided in headquarters. Despite the conflict with his justification with the police, it would be a lot easier to obtain the information without sneaking into headquarters and getting caught again.

Plus, it would be a lot quicker and it could actually save him a lot of time if he’s able to utilize the cops’ equipment, however, he didn’t think they would put one on him. A tight one at that.

And thus, here he was.

“Why do I have to wear this?” Woohyun complained for the nth time once they finished placing the tracking device onto him and Sunggyu literally wanted to put a sock into the other’s mouth- or rather, everyone wanted to put one in.

“You can’t move fifteen feet away from the main tracker or the one on your leg will shock you repetitively.” One of the officers mentioned and Woohyun sort of remember that guy went by the name Myungsoo?

It didn’t even register in his mind that if he walked away from this very room and away from the device that he could be shocked all day long. Hell, the cops are probably having fun with his demise because he can see that all of them are laughing and secretly smiling when they don’t think he could actually notice it.

In fact, they were all obvious.

And he secretly regretted it.

“Yah, did you think we were going to let you work with us without keeping an eye on you?” That tall officer asked Woohyun and the other man seriously didn’t think that far.

Well, with the way Sunggyu persuaded him, he thought he was just going to be kept under the cops’ watch and be interrogate for who knows till when. Considering that he thought Kim Jongwoon was about to go back on his words and tell headquarters to throw him into a bigger cell that time. However, he didn’t expect to actually be involved in the investigation and truthfully, work with other officers.

It’s like a small dream come true with Sunggyu in the picture, but he didn’t let his mind drift any farther than that. He had to think of his father of course, and solve his case as soon as possible.

“Hey, let’s do a test run on the shock levels? Can we?” Sungyeol, Woohyun finally remembered after noting how the taller man would roam around and point out things that no one should bother to note. It made him churn inwardly about the test drive and they all didn’t seem to reject the idea either.

“But we need him to be in good health in order to tell us about the drug.” Myungsoo suggested and Woohyun subconsciously breathed when he said. “We’ll do it after. Right now we need a lead.”

It made Sungyeol frown and Sunggyu agreed- luckily or Woohyun wouldn’t know what he would do if they torture him now.

“Of course, none of you trust me and I don’t blame you guys for having something against me either because all of you have worked hard just to get this far and I’m just suddenly here.” Woohyun mused. It wasn’t good to have everyone against him, but what could he do when he already have a stained reputation in the case to begin with?

Hell, he wasn’t even in the position to complain, but really, was it his fault for dragged into headquarters and with a squad team when he didn’t even ask for it?

He doesn’t know and probably shouldn’t be thinking about blame at the moment because everyone was staring at him, surely for being redundant and not for incompetence.

“Let’s just work on the case together. The faster we solve it, the faster I’m out of here.” He smiled, folding his hands together as he sat cross-legged and he heard one of the officers whistle.

“Ohh, he’s got manners and he’s simple too. I like him.” Hoya gave a smile to Woohyun, who gladly returned it with another one.

There was a cough and Sunggyu spoke up. “Okay, now that we have that out of the way, can you tell us what you know about the drug now?” He asked, more politely, Woohyun noted but didn’t say anything because Sunggyu sounded more like the Sunggyu he knew and not a robotic cop.

He smiled, ignorant of the meaning in the lieutenant’s words and began to think where he should explain first.

“Um… I don’t know where to start. Can you tell me what you have on the case first and then I’ll fill what’s left out?” Woohyun suggested and Sunggyu simply nodded. It wasn’t like he was suppose to withheld any information about the other man, however the rest of the officers eyed the lieutenant for a brief moment until they realize that if they were going to get any information, they would need to provide some as well. “Fine.” He grabbed a document off his desk, probably a recent report on the status of their case.

“The drug began in the Incheon and expanded to Seoul within a few months. The source of where it came from was believed to be an underground activity, however, there wasn’t enough proof to confirm its location nor the cause of the drug. It’s still being distributed and the only suspects we have so far are Lee Donghae, Lee Hyukjae, Shin Dong, and Choi Siwon.”

Sunggyu paused, holding his breath as he watched Woohyun take in the information and nod because apparently, he didn’t have anything to say to that nor add onto it- that was, if there was anything more to say.

“A recent evidence, a video to be precise. “ Sunggyu started off again and then paused, rereading the words again and said. “An image replaying Lee Sungjong’s murder and the intake of drug he took during that night.”

This time everyone looked up at him, as if hearing the news for the first time, which was apparently true, Sunggyu noted that he had forgotten to pass along the news when he was discussing about Woohyun’s placement in Headquarters.

Sadly, it had slipped his mind.

“Were you there that night?” He finally asked and what Woohyun said basically shocked him.

“Yeah, I was there.” Woohyun said, fiddling with his fingers. “I got a text from him to meet him at his apartment because we haven’t seen each other for a long time.” He breathed slowly. “I was hesitant to go and he somehow got my number and wouldn’t stop pestering until I finally said ‘yes.’”

He repositioned his legs and Sunggyu didn’t keep his eyes off them.

“When I got there, the door was already opened and curiously, I went in and found the window ope- “ Woohyun suddenly paused and everyone was watching him intensely now. He gulped.

“The window was open… and….” He stopped again.

“And what, Woohyun?” Sunggyu questioned, unconsciously rubbing his hand over the other’s shoulder, soothing him until he found his breath again.

“I went to look if there was something out there. I saw nothing on the ground and when I tried to pull myself back, someone behind me tried to push me out the window too.” He said, sternly and squad members looked at him, agape and eyes wide.

“I don’t know who it was because he had a cap on and the lights were off so I couldn’t see his face. It was a guy and he ran so I decided to chase after him but lost him afterwards. I had no idea that Sungjong actually fell out the window.” He finished and it took awhile for the officers to look at him properly. Even Sunggyu was having trouble keeping his mouth from hanging open.

It finally clicked in the lieutenant’s head on why he found his friend running away in that dark alley, however, didn’t he find Lee Sungjong falling after that?

Wait, so does that mean the murderer went back to Lee Sungjong’s apartment and then killed him?

Instead of pondering any further, he continued. “From what Dongwoo, our analyst found, he said that it’s just a plain simple sleeping pill. Is that true?” The lieutenant asked this time, hoping for some new information, even if it was just a simple confirmation.

Easily, Woohyun agreed with a “yes” and Sunggyu let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. The rest of the squad looked at him in amusement- well mostly, Hoya for once at his flustered nervous state. He was even taking this lightly, considering that Sunggyu was usually known for his hardcore confrontations, which the rest didn’t see or need to know that.

“Then from there, can you at least tell us how it works? Or maybe any evidence one of the suspects is hiding?” Myungsoo questioned casually and the squad members looked at him with furrowed eyebrows, including Woohyun.

Woohyun looked at each of them warily until he remembered, you can trust them. You need to. No one would shoot you for saying what you think. He breathed out slowly.

“The effects are internal, as you can see that you would need to swallow the drug. With that alone, it works like a sleeping pill, however…” He paused momentarily, grabbing each of the officers’ attention when they all closed in on him.

“What?” Sungyeol asked unconsciously and Hoya hushed him quickly.

“That’s just the primary step to enforce or begin something that comes after that.” He licked his tongue unconsciously and Sunggyu found himself focused on Woohyun’s lips and shook his head. Myungsoo probably noticed but Sunggyu didn’t care because he was already embarrassed as it was.

“Once a person falls asleep.” Woohyun continued. “Their mind becomes less resistant against persuasion and invasions against the mind. With that, a person can talk their way to getting the person to do something for them and set a certain command in their mind.”

“Wait, so you’re saying, people are just persuaded to do things they don’t normally do after falling asleep.” Sungyeol questioned, immersed with Woohyun’s wording for the drug.

“Simply put.”Sunggyu demanded and Woohyun crossed his arms and then breathed.

“It’s hypnosis.”

A/N: More answers, dunno about WooGyu. Very weird... OTL Hope it was nice to see Woohyun talk a lot more. ;~; Helpful too but alas, four suspects listed and which one shall it be? Anyone want to guess or just wait it out at this point? :’D

Anyway, question, comments and criticism are always welcome. \o/
