Snap
Taking a picture of the ground, Sunggyu searched for some remaining evidence that might have been left out from the body and carefully angled his camera again.
“Hyung” Sungyeol called with a paper in his hand and Sunggyu didn’t bother to give him enough time to take a utter a word, “What’s the status?” He demanded and Sungyeol’s face instantly made a huge frown- one which looked like someone just mashed his face downwards. Then he let out a huge sigh when Sunggyu didn’t seem fazed nor impressed by his facial change.
“You were right when you found him. We just confirmed he’s Lee Sungjong, twenty-four and the infamous popstar idol, who became a big hit since last year. Time of death: 22:13 on June 14.” Sunggyu nodded to the details, taking another snapshot with his camera until Sungyeol spoke up again. “Though there is something unusual.” He paused and that’s when Sunggyu looked up.
“The location where he fell is right in front of his own apartment.” Sungyeol mused and flipped through the pages again, making sure what he was saying was accurate because for sure, Sunggyu would butcher a knife at his throat if he dared fooled around on the job.
“So you’re saying he committed suicide?” The lieutenant questioned and his subordinate simply nodded. “Well, that’s what it looks like. Why? Do you think it’s not?” He asked and noticed the lieutenant’s eyebrows furrowing.
It wasn’t long since Sunggyu found Lee Sungjong falling from the sky and landing right on the ground, dead and undoubtedly with his hands clutching at his sides as if he was about to grab something. Even so, the man didn’t even look like the type to intentional commit suicide with his high profile in stardom. It was doubtful enough but it was still possible for the life of a celebrity.
Unless he was murdered.
“Hyung! I found something!” Hoya called from afar, waving his hand frantically to catch the other two’s attention.
Sunggyu hurried to him first and Sungyeol followed closely behind. “What did you find?”
“This.” Hoya held up a small white plastic container, which would look like a prescribed bottle of medicine and Sunggyu briefly remembers another very small object falling a few distances away.
“It was a few feet away from the body- probably rolled off to the bushes and I wouldn’t have guessed it was the victim’s at first but it has his hand prints are on it.” Hoya pointed, holding the container up and reading the label. “It’s sleeping pills. Probably something the victim took before he went to sleep.” He summed, allowing Sunggyu to take it and then observe it carefully.
The bottle didn’t look any different in comparison to any other medically prescribed bottle and it’s even something easily obtained at a drug store.
One would think it was just a common bottle distributed to the local but what was inside probably wasn’t.
Or it could be a clue to the drug they were looking for.
“Sungyeol” He clicked his tongue, turning the bottle once more and then taking a peak to see if there were any pills in it, unfortunately, there weren’t.
“Yes, sir?” Sungyeol straightened himself up and blink curiously.
“Look up Lee Sungjong’s medical records. See if he has any sleeping problems or some unusual behavior and check which drug store he got this from.” He ordered ignoring the way Sungyeol grunted before complying and then taking the bottle to place it in a plastic bag for the prints to stay intact.
After Sungyeol left, Sunggyu turned to Hoya and said, “Good work. Now let’s look for more clues and then we can go home for today.”
“So where were you today, hyung? You weren’t with us in the bar.” Hoya said suggestively and Sunggyu inwardly cursed and nearly let a flutter expression escape on his face. “None of your business, sergeant. Now get back to work.” He spat and stomped away with a few huffs.
Hoya smiled. “Yes sir.”

“Did you get the address too?” Sunggyu asked once he received the copies of Lee Sungjong’s records in his hands after a very exhausted coffee-deprived Sungyeol walked in.
“It’s in the folder.” Sungyeol said, watching the coffee blender intently as it poured his favorite brand of instant coffee right into his cup. He took a few sips with some gleefully smiles and set himself next to Myungsoo.
Sunggyu took a few glances at records and squinted. “It doesn’t look like he was ever prescribed any drugs now showed any sign of having sleeping problems.” He flipped the page “and he doesn’t really have any odd behaviors.”
“Unless you count his girly dances.” Sungyeol commented and received a whack on the head from Myungsoo. “Don’t insult the dead.”
“But why would he commit suicide if his life was going so well? With sleeping pills too.” Sunggyu pondered on the thought, walking back and forth until he decided to throw the report onto the desk. He opened the folder Sungyeol brought in and checked the x-rays from the autopsy.
Myungsoo grabbed the report and skimmed through it, “We didn’t find anything suspicious in his room during the inspection. He did have a lot of fan letters and gifts, especially oversized stuffed toys. There were some angry fan letters but nothing too threatening.” He concluded with a flick of a page and gave it to Sungyeol instead.
“Man, you should have seen his room, hyung. “ Sungyeol spoke up in a surprise. “All those huge stuff animals hanging around his room and taking up so much space. Dang, he must be a lone- ow!” Myungsoo hit him on the head and tsked at his behavior.
Approvingly, Sunggyu thanked Myungsoo for keeping Sungyeol in check while Hoya walked in. “I got the CCTV videos from the apartment Lee Sungjong was staying in. It’s from that night.”
He handed a few CDs to the squad members and they popped it into the PC. “Good work, Hoya.” Sunggyu said, this time with a frowning Sungyeol in the background.
“So everytime Hoya does something, he gets ‘Good work’ and when I do something, I get ‘Where the fuck is it.’ I feel so discriminated.” He complained, receiving a pat from Myungsoo, who later opened his mouth. “Don’t’ forget ‘doing this and that’ because you’re good at it.” He laughed and Sungyeol slapped his hand away.
“Ok, quiet you two. I’m trying to watch this video here.” Sunggyu ordered, his small eyes glued to the screen as he observed the hallways and rooms flicker from one scene to the next. Hoya sat next to him, looking at the screen carefully as Sungyeol and Myungsoo made their way to join them from behind.
The interior of the apartment didn’t look any different, in fact it was as grand as a hotel and one would expect that from a very popular popstar rising up in stardom. Though, the down side effect of it all was that there were a lot of people going in and out.
It was boring for awhile when they spotted Lee Sungjong ride up the elevator and disappeared into his room, never stepping a foot out. He was probably calling it a day because judging by his manager’s schedule, he was supposed to sleep early and wake up for a morning interview.
“Stop right there!” Hoya exclaimed, grabbing the attention from the rest of the squad members. “Rewind, right… here.” He pointed at a suspicious man with a beanie rushing out the hotel lobby.
“Hyung, isn’t that… Nam Woohyun?” Sungyeol said and they all looked at him.
After that they re-ran it a bit more and tried to see his face, however, the quality of the video was a mere blur.
“Are you sure? How do you know it’s Nam Woohyun?” Myungsoo questioned, everyone eyes on Sungyeol and he rubbed his chin slightly.
“I saw his profile picture filed away and he was wearing that beanie and jacket combination together.” He summed. “He also has those dimples you can’t miss anywhere. Like… right here.” He pointed his finger on the screen, blocking the object a little until Hoya moved his finger a bit lower.
Everyone eyed the speckles on the screen wearily, practically in disbelief of Sungyeol’s assumption.
Though, Sunggyu couldn’t say he was wrong. He saw Nam Woohyun that night when he chased after him, however, he was at the bar and the time taken on this video wa-
“The time. What time was this?” He inquired when Hoya lend towards the screen and said, “22:20. Wh- “
Then he understood.
It was a few minutes right after Lee Sungjong was found dead.
“Wait, but how do you know it’s really Nam Woohyun when you could hardly see his face?” Myungsoo demanded, unsure why the rest of the squad would immediately assume Nam Woohyun without any prior evidences. “We still don’t have anything to show he did it.”
Immediately everyone’s face looked down with worry and mixed in with a bit of shame.
Inevitably when it came down to every damn case, evidence was needed. Even if it came in the form of a bottle of medicine, there were no clues that led to Nam Woohyun.

It was in the evening when Sunggyu got called in.
“So you’re saying to close the case quickly?” Sunggyu stated in a monotone as his boss gave him a mild nod. “But it’s not suicide. The case was ju- “
Jongwoon placed his hand in front of Sunggyu and the lieutenant halted his speech.
After gaining some silences, Jongwoon carefully put his hand down and tapped it at the edge of his desk.
“The victim is a celebrity.” He started. “As you know they create the most scandals and complaints throughout the public, thus causing the most damage.” He paused and watched as the lieutenant made a fidget before he finished. “Therefore, we need to close the case to ease the public gossip and protect the reputation of the national police. Do you understand?”
Biting his lips, Sunggyu nodded without a word and continued to look straight down to the floor even though is boss was walking out the room. He ruffled his hair and sighed.
“Aish, it’s not suicide! Why would a flamboyant cheery guy who loves his career decided to drop dead from the world?” He sighed loudly.
It’s murder! The back of his mind screamed even though he wasn’t one hundred percent sure but by the explanation of Sungjong’s manager and medical records, he wasn’t suffering from much stress and if he needed to relieved it anywhere it was on his stuff gifts rather than himself.
He didn’t even have single noticeable scar on him.
Although, it wasn’t like they had much on the case but to close it so quickly for some anonymous reason because honestly, Sunggyu was far from believing it was for the sake of his national pride in the criminal department.
Justice, his ass. He doesn’t even know why he still works here.
Letting out his nth sigh for the day, Sunggyu left his boss’s office, notably making sure he hasn’t left anything behind before heading back to his own office and swiftly reminded of the CCTV videos.
The person on the CCTV had definitely been Nam Woohyun.
However, he wasn’t even sure it was right to convict him yet after chasing him across the streets and nearly shooting him regrettably. If anything, he deserved to miss (and get punched) because he would rather catch him, but catch his friend?
An old friend who suddenly appears after ten years on a murder scene that is.
Even so, without a doubt, Sunggyu need to find evidence first because after he finds that, he’ll discover who caused this mess and close his other case about the on-going drug, which he hopes is soon.
After getting his thoughts together, Sunggyu took the elevator up to his office so he could call it a day and just when he had exited the shuttle, he saw someone passing by.
It was Nam Woohyun.
And he was running away.
