Chapter 8

“Ah- choo!” Sungyeol sneezed, wiping his nose with his finger until Myungsoo handed him a tissue. “Thanks” He muttered, blowing his nose loudly, causing Myungsoo to push him away instead and startling Hoya.

“Aish, do that somewhere else!” Hoya yelled, carrying some box of equipments Dongwoo had frankly ordered him to move around- or just move Hoya away from him.

“Yah, does it look like I can control my allergies?” The taller man leered at Hoya. “I didn’t do it on pur- ah…ahh-choo!” He spat on Hoya and the other officer glared at him, shoving a tissue box at the taller man’s face.

It wasn’t anything the two haven’t argued about and they both could have started their trivial argument too, that is, if Dongwoo hadn’t walked in front of them.

Swiftly, Hoya diverted his attention and Sungyeol rolled his eyes while Dongwoo called out monotonously “finished it,” catching the rest of the squad members’ attention. He waved around some documents and set them on the inspection desk, looking around warily. “Where’s your lieutenant Kim Sunggyu? Isn’t he supposed to be the head of your squad?”

A few moments ago, the special task squad or also known as squad number five happened to accuse them of releasing Nam Woohyun from his cell and helping him escape. However, Myungsoo seemed to have taken care of it and the analyst wasn’t sure what to make of the situation at hand or if Kim Sunggyu was lolling around the police headquarters like a simply playground.

Not that Dongwoo knew what happened to Kim Sunggyu but he definitely knew there was something fishy going on in headquarters and he suddenly had the urge to stay out of it. Whatever it was and just return to his peaceful laboratory where he didn’t have to deal with all the dirty bullshit.

In fact, he was happy enough to finish his work early because thanks to some updated documents, he was able to crack down on the drug’s form.

“He’s taking care of some business right now, but he’ll be back soon.” Myungsoo stated, flipping through the documents. “Did you find anything?”

Grunting, Dongwoo crossed his arms to prevent Hoya from slipping his hand in between his and try to accidentally hold onto it.

“Fortunately nothing special.” He said, inching away from Hoya who followed behind him the moment he moved, almost on impulse. They were shoulder to shoulder and Sungyeol was having a hard time to keep his laughter to himself.

“Then this isn’t the real drug?” Myungsoo asked and Dongwoo wondered why the rest of the squad can’t take him as seriously as the fellow analyst.

“No, it’s still the real deal. There’s just nothing special about it.” He sighed, pushing Hoya once he got too close to breathing close to his face. “Please keep to yourself and go away!” Dongwoo snapped at the other man, however, he didn’t seem fazed at all and continued to look at him dreamingly.

“If it’s real then how does the drug work on people?” Sungyeol questioned immediately and Dongwoo waved him off.

“You tell me. It just looks like a sleeping pill to me and who knows if these people overdose themselves or- will you fuck off already!” He slapped Hoya’s hand away, huffing and slamming a small onto the table. “Anyway, here’s the drug. I’m done. Everything’s on the document and read everything so I don’t have to come back here.”

Irritably, Dongwoo huffed again, walking out without bidding either of the squad officers adieu and the Chief Director Kim Jongwoon came waltzing in instead.

“Sir!” Said each of the officers and the Chief Director looked around. “Where is Lieutenant Kim Sunggyu?”

Again, no one knew and just when Myungsoo was going to speak up again, Hoya composed himself. “He’s out investigating right now and will be back shortly, sir.”

Kim Jongwoon nodded, watching the fellow officers. “Well, please contact him to come back to his office soon. I have some announcements to make with some other news too.”

They shouted ‘yes sir’ in unison.

“Fuck.” Sunggyu curses once he realized he had forgotten his phone, dragging a cuffed Nam Woohyun out of his car. They reached headquarters around eight after Sunggyu got a call from Hoya that their Chief Director wants to speak to him immediately and luckily, he doesn’t have to worry about the custody of Nam Woohyun because he would like to talk to him too. Though Sunggyu doesn’t know why, it’s better than having him interrogate him in that filthy cell.

“C’mon.” The lieutenant ordered the other man and Woohyun followed wordlessly. They made it to the Chief Director’s office perfectly fine and Sunggyu was surprise that the Jongwoon greeted them in himself.

“Have a seat.” He says, or command if one was to only judge him by his rank and not by his humane offer. “It’s been awhile Nam Woohyun. Hopefully your father is doing well.” The Chief Director comments casually, causing Woohyun to twitch at his words and eye him warily.

It wasn’t a matter of secret contact or investigating one’s background, but the fact that Kim Jongwoon and Nam Woohyun’s father were rather acquaintances that it even went as far as the son’s schooling. They certainly weren’t very close- hell, Woohyun isn’t even close to his own father and it was practically all about politics in his father’s eyes.

“I think you would know his situation better than me, sir. Considering that you must know how he coped with his bankruptcy and killed himself afterwards.” Woohyun muttered bluntly and the Chief Director simply raised an eyebrow before nodded in understanding.

“It’s been that long?” He questioned- more to himself and Sunggyu finally spoke up. “Sir, you said you needed to speak to me?”

Kim Jongwoon brightened to the idea and quietly remembered why he had called in the lieutenant. “Ah, yes Lieutenant Kim Sunggyu.” He chuckled, taking out a document. “The request that you sent me to overtake Lee Sungjong’s case has been approved by the other Board Directors and you may resume your position on the investigation.”

Sunggyu sighed in relief ’yes!’ he silently cheered to himself, unconsciously biting his lower lip. “Thank you, sir.” He breathed with a smile, unaware of how Woohyun observed him from his side while Kim Jongwoon smiled confidently.

“It’s not a problem at all.” Says Jongwoon. “I can’t have one of my best cops off the case when you witnessed it yourself.”

Casually, Sunggyu laughs and Woohyun looked from the lieutenant to the Chief Director, as if he was missing something. However, before he could ponder any further on what it was, Kim Jongwoon spoke up.

“As for Nam Woohyun.” He starts, looking at Woohyun and soon Sunggyu’s gaze followed after. “I’ve been reading the reports on the case that you’re one of the prime suspects, however, there isn’t any evidence of you contacting the victim and you’ve been following the drug case as well. Usually we would release you today because we don’t have a warrant to arrest you without proof but since it’s a matter of a murder case, it won’t be until tomorrow. But…”

Sunggyu held his breath, even though he didn’t know what exactly for, but the news of what was going to be done to Woohyun for the time being made him curious.

“I was thinking if we should put you on the squad team instead. Temporarily, because you haven’t received a badge and if anything, you seem to have done the most research in the case. There were some investigations of certain areas you’ve stayed in and have shown that you are quite capable of tracing the drug spellbound. Also, with information about its components.” He finished, even if he knew Nam Woohyun had trespass on police property awhile ago and escaped his cell, he didn’t mention it so far.

Silently, Woohyun stared at the Director, his breathing composed more than Sunggyu would have expected from him and he surely didn’t smile at the proposition either.

“Why?” Was the other word he uttered and Kim Jongwoon wasn’t fazed by the response at all, probably only expected it. “Why would you need my help if you’ve already taken the information from me and have every suspicious reason to prevent me from leaving?” He asked more specifically.

Tilting his head, the Chief Director only smiled. “Because I know you have potential, Woohyun.” He said quietly. “You can think of it as a chance to be a cop again or an opportunity to clear the charges against you but, I do know that you have a very strong conviction of justice and I’m not going to waste that just because you had so many unfortunate situatio- “

“You know nothing about me!” Woohyun shouted abruptly, startling Sunggyu when he stood up, looking down at the Director. “You may have known my father and my activities but you surely do not know what I want.” He hissed vigilantly and Sunggyu stood up too.

“Yah, Woohyun, calm dow- “

“You calm down, Gyu. I am not going to be a pawn for the cops and I don’t need help in researching a drug that fucking ruined my father!” Sunggyu froze and gasp. His eyes widen and his mouth hung agape on what the hell did Nam Woohyun just say.

“Your father?” He asked slowly and Woohyun didn’t say anything. Tears were evidently about to pour right out of the corner of his eyes and he quickly excused himself without a word, shutting the door behind him.

Sunggyu stayed silent until her remembered the Chief Director had completely witnessed the whole thing. “A-ah, sir. I apologize, I’ll go get him right- “

“It’s fine.” Jongwoon said. “The lost still must affect him greatly so I don’t blame him. You can go.” He mumbled quietly and the lieutenant almost had a hard time hearing it.

Once Sunggyu realized he had been dismissed, he left the office and hurriedly followed after Woohyun.

Fortunately, he wasn’t far and only barely reached the other far corner of the hall when Sunggyu spotted him, chasing him down. Taking him only a few minutes to reach the other man and he called out to him.

“Yah yah yah! Woohyun!” He grabbed onto the other’s shoulder, who instantly shrugged him off but it made Sunggyu grip onto him even harder.

“What do you want, Gyu?” Woohyun asked lazily, exhausted even when the other set sights onto him. “Help me find the drug.” He demanded. “You promised me we were going to be the best cops in South Korea. Are you going to go back on that?” He huffed and Woohyun didn’t seem fazed.

“Promises are meant to be broke- “

“Don’t give me that bullshit!” Sunggyu yelled at him and the other almost paid attention to him for the first time. “Look, I don’t give a fuck what happened to your father or how this person is using it to get to you but I do know you want fucking justice, Woohyun. Even if it is… “He paused. “Illegal. You said so yourself that you’re being framed and this person is out to get you. Well fuck, I don’t know about you but I’d be trying to chase this fucker down and make sure he never sees the light of day for ever messing with me in the first place.”

He breathed heavily and swallowed. “You’re just a coward, Woohyun.” He finished, just staring the other off even though he wasn’t exactly sure what he was going to do now that he can’t interrogate his friend anymore.

And just when he was about to leave, Woohyun took hold of his shoulder.

He punched him.

A/N: bet no one expected that with some answers and reason on Woohyun’s part. :P Quite a stubborn man and Sunggyu is even more stubborn so…. Wait for more? /is shot/ I know it’s taking a long time for them to stare get going on this case but I hope they work on it soon so I don’t have to keep making this longer. OTL
