So I have not been so good at adding to the database of the 1940 census, but on the other hand I have been adding to the Find a Grave site. Somehow it's more fun. I can only do one page every half hour on the census, and some of the writing is so horrible that it can be very frustrating. As it is with the stones I am trying to transcribe, I have to

I agree with you. Flour or rubbing is better than preservation without knowing what it says. I say this as an archivist. If everyone were out flouring stones at all hours of the day, then it might be a problem. But the reality is that many/most are just neglected. Everything in moderation.
