Cars vs Guns and other stuff.

I was listening to a story on NPR about ice racing in NH, and some of the racers who race on frozen ponds were 13 years old, not even legal to drive on solid ground. The girl also said she was driving standard, which she really didn't know how to drive. Now, I have never seen an ice race, but it occurred to me that there is a strange disconnect ( Read more... )

and yet, at age 12 David Farragut took command of a captured british warship, and sailed it home to Boston on the high seas, later becoming our first admiral.

autos work better than automatic shift on ice anyday! meanwhile the long childhood imposed on today's kids does not make them capable of being better adults later on. in fact many more are still behaving like kids past 30 to 40 years of age. no wonder most of you are into drugs and booze or worse. go freak out some more. Who's into drugs and booze? "Not I" said the fly. Just coffee for me. My only drug of choice.

Does baked brie count as a drug?

Seriously, though, maturity is a greatly delayed process these days and it has hurt us. Kids have handled guns and wagons for centuries, but they were also expected to start families and work as soon as they hit adolescence. They may not have been mentally mature back then either, but at least everyone was raised with solid upbringing so they knew how to make basic decisions. Then there's that fear of God thing, which apparently did a lot to keep kids in line.

I might add there's no need for machine gun training in this day and age in America so most of them just shoot as a show of power (like wearing a tie, having a fast car or grunting at the table).
