Same as you. Love them, but it isn't 'luck'. It's a case of what we want, true, but, yeah, there are days... I don't have peanuts, but I afford it because I want to. There is no luck involved.
As someone who dreams, every day, about owning her own horse one day, and then realizing that may never come true due to a varying amount of circumstances ... I still think you and everyone else who can afford in some way, shape, or form to own are lucky.
I agree that we are lucky to be able to spend time with these wonderful and crazy animals. But seriously, I go without a lot so I can afford my horse. I haven't had a vacation in... I can't even remember. If I have a vet bill it's pretty catastrophic but my horse will get treatment. My time is never my own. That is *choice* yes. But it's not luck.
I don't really think you need luck to be lucky in all cases. I already go without a lot just to be able to afford once a week lessons, have the gas to put in my car to make the 45 minute commute each way to the barn, and have a trainer that lets me dote on her horses like they were my own. But to be able to afford it ... well, my career path may not allow it, nor can I ever allow myself to go broke and into debt *again* regardless of the reason--horse ownership or not
( ... )
:) well, good for you. No, I had a big long gap between horses with three little ones on my hip. But i got in rides from friends etc. I didn't actually own my own horse until I was 50. But my career was horses so I was always around them. It isn't the same, though. I have a totally different attitude to horses i work with and the horse I own. With all the heartache that horses put us through. I wouldn't change it.
I just, I think, objected to the word 'luck' because it is more of a passion one is prepared to indulge.
Can I steal your rant and replace my own?wastedrockApril 23 2010, 01:32:49 UTC
I hate it when (other horse people and non horse people alike!) say "how can you just lease your horse out!? I could never get rid of MY horse"/ pet of some kind.
It makes me want to strangle them. Yeah like I LOVE not riding 6 days week like I used to or having my partner of 8 years away from me constantly. That's what I love. ::shakes head:: I didn't do it cuz I wanted to, I did it cuz it's what is best for Jake, and because I just can't afford it, and neither can my family.

:( he misses you too!! he just stands there and watches me ride Andy and Justin in the ring beside him (honestly has a look of pure jealousy and "why aren't you riding me?? ) and it's the saddest thing ever!! I think I am going to start walking on him as much as time will allow, and slowly condition him up have him ready for you to *hopefully* take to the mountains this summer!! ........ uh oh, does that qualify as you being lucky?? lmao!!
I think its just a matter of no one (except those who spend as much time around horses as you do) knows how much work it really IS to take care of a horse. That's a lesson well learned from you, I can't believe how much work a horse takes. I'm surprised they ever survived for so long without humans pampering them!
That's why I'll never have my Clydesdale horse unless I'm rich enough to pay someone else to take care of it! :P
P.S. Even then, I probably wouldn't get one... >_>!
LOL! Yeah, I really do think that's it. I think a lot of it IS that childhood dream that a lot of young girls especially had about having a horse, without really knowing what it means to have a horse.
Everyone thinks of how nice it would be to go for a ride in a field on a beautiful summer's day, but it doesn't occur to them that it also means handwalking at 2:00am in -20c, or trying to find missing shoes so a farrier can put them back on and prevent your horse from going lame when you're supposed to be at a best friend's staggette party... >.>
It drives me crazy too. I just give a smile and say, "well, my bank account doesn't think so," and leave it at that. It isn't luck, it's hard work, it's research, it's pain, it's vet bills and late nights and bruises and heartache.
And then it's a three hour ride to the river and back, arriving home with the sunset on my back.
