Poinsettias

Every year I hope that some of my christmas poinsettia will survive past the holidays. These two are doing well so far!

The first one is in a really tiny pot. I've noticed that they seem to like the smaller containers. I just need to keep an eye on it so it doesn't dry out.

Congratulations on getting your poinsettia this far. I have a hard enough time keeping a poinsettia through December. The leaves always fall off prematurely and I never really make it too far into the season. So, I just don't spend the money on them.

Thanks so much!♥ Poinsettias are bit tricky to grow, and are hit and miss when it comes to survival. I've thrown away two so far this year, and one more is not doing well, but might make a recovery, so we'll see. I've found that they don't like getting too dry, so I check on them regularly. If the temperature is too cold, the leaves will drop. Sometimes though, they drop all their red leaves, and instead of dying, the plant produces a new set of green leaves.

I've been able to keep a poinsettia maybe twice in my lifetime. One year it really grew with lots of green leaves, but then I don't know what I did or didn't do, it just started dying. They are very temperamental plants. Last time I bought one, it was gorgeous. The leaves were variegated with red and pink veins. And it was BIG. It was a lovely plant, but soon after the leaves just started falling away in droves. I watered it, but it just didn't help. By Christmastime the plant was gone. Oh well. That was a couple years ago and the last time I purchased that plant.

I think the plants are grown to be a pretty spot of color during the holiday season, and the growers don't factor in longevity, because most people toss their poinsettias at the end of the year. I have the same problem with mini pine trees (not Norfolk Island Pines, those are hardy). The needles get dried out and then the plant is dead. So, it's like having a bouquet of flowers. I figure if they look pretty for a couple of weeks, they're done their part, lol. It's a bonus if I get any of them to survive past that ( ... )
