My father, The Racist

Aug 30, 2006 20:03

You know, can I just ask why in hell you would move to a multicultural city like Toronto if you are a racist? Or why move to Canada at all, for that matter? Why continue living in a city that is increasing multicultural? Why not move? Why complain at all, actually? Every country is becoming more multicultural as the years go on. You may as well get ( Read more... )

I don't have time to read this whole thing-- I'm about to head home from work-- but I will tell you that my university is 50% Asian? I've met two people who didn't like Asians, and I've never met anyone who didn't in my LIFE.

Humanity is stupid.

Hun,

I could relate to this post so much there are no words, really. *huge hugs* Except I know exactly what it feels like to be surrounded by prejudice (literally since I live in a stereotypical Texas town) and have it in your home too... Mom and I have issues with Randy and some of his "beliefs"...

I joke around about southern US states a lot, but they are very well known for racism, unfortunately. I'm sorry you have to experience this as well, both in and outside of the home. I know there are issues with homophobia there too, so I guess I should be grateful I see less of that than racism here. But either way, it's all horrible no matter how much or how little there is. :(

Most of my family is the same way. Except not so much with blacks, because a lot of our family is black. My mom mostly complains about Arabs, it's very annoying. "Oh they're taking all the jobs, etc".

"have you ever seen a black pedophile?" - Same thing could be said about serial killers, most are white. People usually ignore that when they're bashing other races.

Yes, pretty much. There are different majorities for every type of crime, and I don't think any race is more responsible than another. Although it sometimes might play a role, race usually has very little to do with crime. It is where you live, what kind of job you have, if you have enough money to support yourself, if you are exposed to things like alcohol and drugs, if you have a substance abuse problem, if you were abused as a child, if you have a bad temper, what types of people you hang out with, if you are in a gang, what kind of values you were taught growing up, etc. It is a combination of all of those factors and has less to do with race than any of those things. A pedophile is not a pedophile because he is white; a pedophile is a pedophile because of, most likely, a really messed up childhood where his parents were neglectful, physically or sexually abusive, never bothering to teach him proper morals and values.

you know what's really weird is that the people i have encountered who have actually come to the united states from developing parts of africa have more ambition, more faith, and more general goodness about them than a lot of the spoiled, ignorant assholes who were born and raised here.

Hah, yeah, but you live in the US so that's expected. ;) I kid, I kid. (No, really, bad joke. There are plenty of kick-ass Americans. I'm not anti-American.) Do love the icon though. :P

I think it's probably 50/50, to be honest. I think there is an equal amount of spoiled, ignorant assholes everywhere of varying colours, creeds, cultures, genders and ages. No one can rightfully make the statement that any one culture is less ignorant than another, right? So it's best to keep things neutral and just assume there is an equal amount of ignorance everywhere. And from my experience, that is how it has been, so I just stick with that line of thinking.

It's really sad that immigrants aren't given credit by some people who live in the countries they move to. They keep the economies alive in many instances. They even create new jobs. And they bring in their own expertise and alternative knowledges. It's just sad all around.

You can't change people. The older they are the harder it is. You can encourage new thinking and raise awareness but you will not chnage people who are already set in their ways. And everyone finds it easier to blame someone else for 'whatever' then to think it might in anyway be with them. Such are people ( ... )

Well, I don't fully agree with that. Human beings have the intelligence and the ability to reason, which most animals do not and most human beings like to think they have most intelligence than an animal (which I find is rarely the case, but you know). If you have half a brain, you can talk yourself out of a bad habit. This is the exact same thing smokers have to do, alcoholics, drug addicts. It's hard, it's a lot of work, but it can be done. And I will never stop believing that. People have to roll with the punches. People who refuse to move into the current times always have trouble living their lives, and I find that really ignorant. As you live, you should be learning and moving and evolving. Not standing in one place ( ... )

Aaah one of the things I love so much about you is your faith in people. I guess esp cos of recent events I think the majority of people really are ignorant and are happy in their misguided beliefs, whatever they are. *hugs* x

Oh, it's not faith in humanity. I have very little of that. But I truly believe people are more capable than they lead on. I think eveyone is capable of reworking their beliefs and opinions with a little work and effort. It's just too bad 95% of the population chooses not to.

I know how jaded you can become after experiences like the recent one you've had. And I totally understand it. I guess all we can do is get back up on our feet and try, try again.
