CBS has its work cut out producing a modern day series in direct comparison with BBC Sherlock. And JLM in direct comparison with BC once again... good luck to him! For his sake I hope that the concept and scripts are excellent rather than elementary.
OMG. Now, after I've read the article and seen the photos and known whicn actors are involved, I've lost any hope in this production. It would take long to explain this but I know this one will never be a good one for a Russian viewer.
Oh now that IS weird. O.O I don't even know quite what to say about that except that, no offense to JLM at all as he is a brilliant actor, but seriously, US TV, what is even going on here???
As a US citizen living in the UK, and having grown up on mostly British productions of SH, I find it so disappointing that so many elements of US television have been reduced to copycatting behaviour simply to turn a profit rather than concentrating on creating some actual new content. Blech.
Well I really hope, for the sake of JLM, that CBS produce something of quality that doesn't too obviously rip off BBC Sherlock. Setting in in New York is a start. Presumably there will be a pilot, which may or may not succeed to become a series. I'm certainly curious... although heaven knows when or if we'd ever get to see it over here in the UK... but oh the irony (probably the wrong word but you know what I mean) of the lead casting! :-)))
I like your outlook on the US Elementary pilot. I've had my little Victor Meldrew rant for the evening ... lol ... but in actuality I don't wish the production any ill will. But, like you, I hope it's not too much of a rip off of BBC Sherlock. I'm sure Sue Virtue & Co. will be watching closely. ;)
I will be the party pooper. I don't like JLM. Benedict IS Sherlock. How can JLM even hope to compete? JLM should not have gone for this. He is just going to emerge looking like the poor relation. He just does not have Benedict's talent.
Oh, don't get me wrong. I don't believe that there is the slightest chance that JLM can make even a quarter of the impact that BC does as Sherlock. I agree that he does not have that presence, and do wonder slightly at his choosing to 'compete'. But I am curious as to what the overall CBS concept is to be. And would watch an episode or two of Elementary if given the chance to find out.
I was actually quite interested in Elementary until I got this news. I wanted their "Sherlock" to be American; I wanted them to use an American. I did not want an Englishman abroad.
And yes, I think JLM is competing; and he has bitten off more than he can chew in this instance! Benedict has the intelligence and the quick mind; his spitfire delivery is quite something to behold. In the commentaries, even he admits how hard it is! There is no way in hell than JLM can do that!
I wouldn't be surprised if, like Hugh Laurie as House, JLM did play the role as an American. He's done US series before. The more I think about this though, the more I hate the whole idea... Like RDJr, JLM isn't even tall enough to play SH, never mind anything else! But at least I can believe in RDJr's fast physical and mental reactions. Sadly not so with JLM. :-/

There is of course a new Russian television series being filmed http://www.sherlocknews.com/2011/12/tv-new-russian-sherlock-holmes.html, although they are sticking to canon era.
