I have complicated feelings about Russian literature classics :/ Can't bear that pessimism. As soon as I start reading anything written before the 20th century I got the feeling like the only thing left to do for me is to go and hang myself...
I think that maybe you should read Anna Karenina in English for a different perspective. :-) I don't remember being particularly depressed by the novel when I read it before. I seem to remember finding Flaubert's Madame Bovary, which has a similar sort of theme, more upsetting. But I read both so long ago...
