I honestly thought i read this one...you asked me to read over it and I thought I had...you have my apologees.

You placed second so I think it found its audience at least.

You did a good job of sadness without the maudlin, of dignity without sap...and Holmes slipping in showing caution but by his presence quiet support was perfect and I think shows why making them friends is so superior to trying to shoe horn them into lovers.

great job! Sorry I failed to give you feed back before now...if I were to suggest anything it would be that the story ended too abruptly, I think that Watson's departure maybe with one last salute to the lit candles and Holmes offering him an arm to support him limping out would have just added that one last grace note...but as is very nice work you have a real subtlety that not many have in their work.

And don't worry I might dabble in BBC Sherlock because I am such a Martin Freeman fan but Gaslight Holmes will always be my first love and primary home.

thanks once again for posting this!

This is such a moving piece. You truly captured the despair of grief and senselessness of death but it was balanced with such respect and ended with the final comforting element. I loved Holmes' presence and words at the end. This was so well written. Thank you for sharing it!

I think your writing is fine and I did not see anything in it which could be taken to be insulting to the memory of the dead of the 66th. Yes, there are one or two factual errors, but I can hardly blame you for not knowing as much about my family as I do. Walter and Herbert Olivey are hardly household names well known to the modern reader. I think you did well with the material you had at your disposal. My comment was only intended as a corollary to what you had written and was certainly not intended as any sort of request to change what is, after all, a story not my forebears but about Dr Watson and in that I think you have done well.

Keep up the good work.
