Thank you for this comment. I am a new fan-fiction writer who is still trying to improve. It was never my intent to disrespect those who fought and perished in the 2nd Anglo-Afghan War and I hope you find me sincere in this. Indeed, the 130th anniversary of Maiwand struck me very personally considering that combat troops, peace-keepers, and civilians are still in conflict in Afghanistan.
The information about your family in your comment is fascinating. Real history and real personal anecdote are much more interesting than any fan fiction can ever hope to be. To claim that these errors you point out were caused by my application of 'artistic/dramatic license' would not be wholly accurate. I blame my lacking historical scholarship entirely and if I had (at the time of writing) the insight you provided in your comment, I would have written differently. In reality, I chose to mention 2nd Lt Walter Rice Olivey because he was the youngest officer of the 66th to perish at Khig and there were accounts of his bravery in defending the colours. Subsequently, I found reference to Herbert and somehow misinterpreted his age before placing in my fictitious setting.
That being said, if you have any aspect of this story you wish me to change or amend in any way, please contact me through the 'personal message' function. I would appreciate hearing from you and would very much like to learn more.
Yours truly,
~CFP
