I've long been delighted and impressed that the people who read my journal originate from far and wide. What I'd love is for you to comment below, and tell me which region/country you are from. And I'd love if you could add to that one particular thing that makes your part of the world unique. It might be music, a TV show, a recipe, a landmark, a ( Read more... )

Jenn, New York State, USA, well, my governor screws around literally with high priced call girls That's not unique, is it? :-)
BUT my cousin went to high school with Spitzer's call girl, and she's NOT shocked at her career choice. :-)

South Salt Lake City, Utah.

And no, it's not the Mormons that make this place unique because every area has it's odd religious thing. Instead, it's the power of the underground here. It's a tiny community (2.8 million people in the whole state) and most of the population is centered in the Salt Lake Valley. So, there's the "culture" here and then the counter-culture. You've never seen more tattoo shops, underground CD and book stores, piercing parlors, dive bars, etc.

As for South Salt Lake ... it's a fucking shithole. The roads are falling apart, there are barely sidewalks, and I'm sure we're all dying of industrial chemical poisoning. But I'd rather live here than Draper or Bountiful. :)

You know, I've gotten the impression from reading your posts that there was more to Utah than just Mormons. It sounds like you guys enjoy continually giving the finger to the Mormon clean-cut image lol.

It sounds like a vibrant, close-knit community.

It's interesting because there is SO much hatred from so many people toward the "oppressing" culture and they aren't exactly my cup of tea either, but the culture has created so much of an underground that it's really a cool city to live in. And, no matter who you are, I think there's a natural defense of the state and the lifestyle here. Even if all you want is out, if someone else is badmouthing Utah, you jump on em. *laughs* It's our place to do it, no one else's ( ... )

My ancestry is actually Dutch (by way of Belgium). My maiden name is Vermynck.

European politics in general are much more rough and tumble than they are here.

I agree about freedom of speech and opinion. Personally I think that some people who get offended really need to develop a sense of humor.

Oh that's cool! And that's a typical Belgian surname too;) (We don't use the y much... the Belgians do. We use ij mostly.)

Oh it's a soap opera, really, European Politics *giggle*

My ancestry is Dutch as well! My last name gets lots of weird looks especially if I have to spell it after I've pronounced it...de Jongh.

My father was born in Rotterdam in the 1920's and had great stories about growing up in the city.

Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA. There's a lot that people don't know about Florida - and I guess that's the secret, the thing that makes it unique. People think of us and they think of Disney or spring break on the beach. But it's full of hidden treasures - cultural, historical, and ecological. And so diverse! Did you know that 1 out of 2 people in Miami is foreign-born?

I haven't visited Florida in almost 20 years, and that was to be in Tampa to take the Florida Bar Exam.

We used to take school vacations in Pompano Beach, but of course, like typical school vacations, you're not there to travel around and explore. My mom wanted to go to the beach, period. Of course that didn't stink lol.

Now that I'm older, I really want to explore. My husband has been all over the country in his service with the air force, and he want to take me and our son and show us the real country.

Well, if you ever want to explore here, I'll be happy to direct you or play tourguide!

And believe me, I'm not knocking hanging out on Pompano Beach. It's how I spend a good number of my weekends in the course of a year. ;-) It's just that there's so much more to see, and right at your fingertips too.

Thanks for replying!

I've never been to Rome. The closest I got was a trip to Paris with a high school group.
