I've long been delighted and impressed that the people who read my journal originate from far and wide. What I'd love is for you to comment below, and tell me which region/country you are from. And I'd love if you could add to that one particular thing that makes your part of the world unique. It might be music, a TV show, a recipe, a landmark, a ( Read more... )

Bloomington/Normal, Illinois here. This is alleged to be the only place in the nation with two universities on the same street. Also home to Beer Nuts, State Farm Insurance, and... um... soybeans and corn? I miss Chicago. To make things extra special, we're also known, I suppose, for having a really bad nickname. Champaign/Urbana (the next University town south) shortens nicely to Chambana, but BloNo just doesn't work as well.

No it doesn't.

My husband is from Salem, Illinois, down in the "Little Egypt" section of the state (at least that's what they call it). It's right on 57 and about an hour east of St. Louis.

Really? Cool. I know exactly where that is - my father and a good part of my family is from Mt. Vernon, and seeing the highway signs for Salem was a good hint when we were little that we were finally almost done with the road trip.

Hmmm, ok, I used all my good stuff on the other entry...

Well, generically speaking, I'm from NJ. Northern NJ to be more specific. What I like (liked?) best about living in NJ near NYC was the lack of terrible effects from Mother Nature. I'm not saying we never got snow, ice rain or the like, but somehow, when compared to things like hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, mud slides, beach erosion, tornados, it just seemed a fairly safe place to live weather-wise. I also liked that we have 4 distinct seasons and changing colors. I lived in Puerto Rico during the winter one year and I hated the green every single day for months on end.

Moving just a short 40 miles northwest has resulted in a distinct extension of the winter season and I note there is more snow and rain than I would have gotten where I lived before. I think if I ever got the chance again, to live closer to where I used to, I would take it. I know lots of peeps make fun of NJ, but I love it.

We have 4 seasons too (5 if you count mud season, sometime in late-March-early April), although it takes spring a long time to get here because of the cool ocean waters.

I'm always saying that I want to live someplace where it's always warm. I suppose it would be worth a try for at least one year, to see if I really like it warm and sunny all the time.

thanks for replying!
