"It looks nice." It sounded almost as awkward as he felt in the situation. At least he was putting on an honest smile as he looked around.

"Thank you. I appreciate all of this..." He gave a small wave of his hand to the spread.

"Nuts to you," she said testily to the bowl, though clapped her mouth shut, hoping no one nearby thought she was referring to them.

"How've you been, anyway?"

"I've been fine, thanks." Which wasn't precisely a lie. He'd been fine by Jack Bauer's standards. "How about you?"

A guy friend. A friendship that Sally was happy to misinterpret because honestly, she'd take a suave vampire wooing her daughter over some glowing blue naked H-bomb any day.
She had greeted Laurie with a hug and a kiss, passed Aaron by with a coy, knowing smile complete with a "Happy Birthday", and immediately situated herself by the booze.
To Sally, a party's not a party unless she has some kind of drink in her hand.

"Looks like you're enjoying yourself."

She's checking up on her old...young mother. Christ, she's no old lady, and she's sure as hell no kid.
Sally raises her glass in mock toast to go along with that smile of hers, and she knocks back the rest of her drink. One down, however many more drinks left to go until the booze really starts to hit home.
"What, you don't have a problem with that, do you hon? A mother's allowed to enjoy a party her kid threw for a friend without a questioning look, y'know." She takes the initiative to pour herself another drink. Why yes, she did say friend in a tone that was insinuating something.
"An' I think you're doing a great job at hostessing."

"I'm glad you're having a good time, Mother, but there's no need to go overboard you know. The party's barely started, after all." She frowned, eyes parked squarely on the bottle in her mother's hand. "Save some for the rest of us."
