[There is an audible crackle of static as the sound comes on. When Ryan begins to speak, it's in the confident, measured, animated voice of someone who is very practiced at speaking for public broadcast.]Ah, a city. Everywhere you look you can see it: the fruit of man's industry. For what is a city if not a testament to the wills and ingenuity of ( Read more... )

And? A city will only thrive when all those individuals with in it may reach their fullest potential. Those who cannot protect themselves are simply holding you back.

Hm. I admit there is value in protecting the young who often cannot help themselves and without whom all the work of this generation would be for nothing.

The plight of children is an exception and not the situation to which I was referring, for the most part.

AND WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO ARE NOT MEN
WHAT ARE WE ENTITLED TO HERO

Whatever you can achieve for yourself. As is the case with all individuals, man or woman, lowly worker on the factory floor or the fattest of fat cats in Washington. Hero or villain.

The morally righteous, those sanctimonious fools who can believe that their way is right, they have always sought to break what they cannot claim. Wars, the atom bomb.

They do not fathom that their mere existence entitles them to nothing, that right is not necessarily on their side.

Yes.

Unequivocally yes.

It is reassuring to find that not all in this city are as foolish as the system which greeted.

Agreed, Mr. Ryan. Most assuredly so.

A man is entitled to the sweat of his brow; the talented are entitled to rise to the top above the mewling, squirming masses; those who work hard should be rewarded for their efforts. A man after my own... heart.

I am Christopher Astrum; and though it may be preemptive to say so, I believe it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance?

I'm afraid I disagree. The pleasure is entirely mine, Mr. Astrum.

I admit to my surprise in finding such an enlightened view in a city of self-styled heroes. I would imagine that the urge to be seen to be on the side of the virtuous, to participate in some nonsense spectacle of "doing right," would be overwhelming for many.

Perhaps.

The better question would be: can a man overcome these so-called "parasites" to flourish in this toxic society he himself has built?

To which I would say that a man is only limited by his own inherent abilities and those limits which he places on himself. If this society is a limit, it is only because he lets it be.

If the parasites reach deep into his pocket, it is only because he lets them as well.

You would seek to have Darwinism be the modus operandi of society, then? Those who can, do, and those who cannot, die?
