Philosophy for later, groceries and Iowa

Reading this review/interview with John Haught on Salon, I can't quite decide whether I want to read his book. But he makes some interesting points in the interview, and some that I'm not sure I agree with, and anyhow, it has certainly been food for thought. So I'm linking it here, so that when I am some day free to devote myself to reading about ( Read more... )

wow. looks like (as i have no car) i moved out of hp just in the nick of time!

as for the iowa returns... so, i really think huckabee is a crap-ass candidate. he seems dumb as a post (see how he didn't realize he'd be crossing a picket line to go on the tonight show this week), and doesn't have much good policy (or much policy at all) up his sleeves, nor a really effective group of advisors.

so it would seem that people won't actually vote for him, right? or that we should demand greater... intellect, informedness, etc., from a front-running candidate. i keep thinking, "he's so dumb! he may seem like a sweet christian, but he's so dumb! there's no WAY the american people will elect the likes of him!"

and then i remember that back in 1999 and 2000, i was saying the same thing about george w bush. and i start to get scared.

I suspect that Huckabee doesn't give a damn whether or not he's crossing a picket line. Especially not a picket line made up of Hollywood writers.

I shudder to think that this potential theocrat got the nod from the caucuses.

I'm a bit confused as what constitutes crossing the picket line. Leno is back sans writers (ie everything has to be improv/nothing written down ahead of time), so does that count as crossing the picket line? As opposed to one of the shows (I forget which) that didn't cut a deal with the union but is still back with writers ( ... )

If the writers of THAT particular show are Striking, and picketing outside, then you are crossing the picket line. Yes, Leno and Conan are crossing the picket line ( ... )

I know what you mean about the candidates. I can't stand Huckabee and it REALLY scares me that he is George Bush Version 2.0. Really is dumb as a post (as mentioned previously) and has made some really assinine decisions (pardoning a rapist without checking into the facts of the case and admitting that he didn't know enough about it).

I know it sounds like I'm talking crazy, but there's soemthing about Obama that I just don't like. I can't put my finger on it though. I need to do more research on him, so far... I like Edwards

Close but not quite.

The actual issue seems to be whether he pressured the parole board to grant him parole. (Especially because he killed a woman after his parole.)

DuMond's sentence was commuted from life in prison in 1992 by Jim Guy Tucker, while Bill Clinton was governor and Tucker was serving as acting governor. DuMond never received a pardon.

However, Huckabee did announce shortly after he took office that he intended to grant clemency to DuMond, and questioned his guilt. The governor later denied DuMond's clemency request the same day the state parole board voted to grant DuMond parole. He wasn't actually freed until two years later, when the board accepted his parole plan to move out of state.

OoOh Thanks! I probably should have looked that up a little more than mentioning what I thought I heard on GMA while dressing in the morning. Eick! I'm being as bad as the AM Talk Radio DJs that piss me off so much.
