rodlox at my personal journal when I asked for prompts to get me back to writing. My first drabble since February 2011. Wow. It's not my best but I had fun writing it and that's what matters to me at this point. I hope you enjoy.
Disclaimer: If you recognize it, regrettably - it's not mine.
Colby sighed, shaking his head as he looked through the box on his desk... memories from his pre-Janus List life, piled into 2x2x2 cardboard and only half-full. He wondered when his life got so complicated and so sad, knowing it was the day he met Dwayne. The whole spy debacle had nearly cost him his life, had lost him his best friend, and now it seemed he’d also lost his woolly bugger - the fishing lure his dad had made for him and one of the only good memories Colby had left of the man.
He’d always known serving his country would come with a price, but somehow he underestimated the cost.
Just as he started to wonder if what he’d done was worth it, his eye caught on something small and gold at the bottom of the box. He pulled the charm from under the flap, smiling when he saw the familiar Ferris wheel shape. In an instant, he was transported back to a time of first love... the girl with the red curls and the long legs. He’d kissed her for the first time at the top of that Ferris wheel at the winter carnival in Boise his sophomore year of high school. And she’d given him this charm before he’d left for Afghanistan, wanting him to remember that moment no matter where he was or what happened. He thought of that night now and somehow felt better. His life hadn’t always been a lie and there were some memories worth saving.
He would fix this thing with David, with his team. He would make his peace with Dwayne. And then, maybe he’d look up that same girl with the red curls and the long legs to see how she was doing... see if she remembered. Maybe. Just maybe.
