I have no idea when this was implemented--I seem to recall reading their inactive userpic FAQ entry some months back and not seeing it there--but LJ will now delete any icons that are inactive for more than six months. This means if you have a journal that hasn't been paid for a while, it is probably a good idea to make sure you have the icons

Yeeeeeeaaaahhh thanks for finding that, since any accounts older than two years old, I no longer have the image files for. Yay computer crashes. I'm worried mostly for accounts that were paid, then I switched to sponsors + icons and lost the sponsors... since they've technically been unpaid for way more than six months. Since this wasn't an announced change, I'm not sure how it works. At least we found out before October 16th? That would be six months.
