I know I've told you this before, but I had a job where I made TONS of money and came home at night to fantasize about ways to hurt myself so I could miss work. Having a job where I don't make any money at all but have personal happiness is so, soooo much better. My point is: happiness is what matters, not the circumstances. Frankly, I think figuring that out IS what being an adult is about. You're doing awesome S, just keep on going!

I always treasure your advice and thoughts! <3 That's pretty much the nail on the head, and I'm very very glad to know that I'm not only one who thinks that way! Unfortunately I don't think NYC is the best place to try and ~discover~ myself and what I want to do with my life, what with cost of living and unemployment numbers still so high, but I am truly grateful for the learning experience.

Sometimes I think about how much of a failure I feel like for not getting a ~grownup job and doing ~grownup work, but... I think I'm slowly coming to the realization that, as much as I'd love to be known as Sarah: Assistant Editor or whatever, jobs don't make me happy.

This is a HUGE realization, one that so many people never reach. To me, it's one of the most adult realizations: that life is not like what you thought it would be as a kid, and living it on your own terms is so much more important than conforming to other people's standards. Yay!

Hahaha, yay indeed! That's honestly a great relief to hear. I find it's much in the same as how most of society perceives "success" - married in your twenties, kids by your thirties, a house/job security/etc. I think I'm not on that path either lol. But then I get frustrated when I'm not successful where I SHOULD be, and then in comes depression and whatnot. So sometimes I really have to force myself to step back and tell myself that just because I SHOULD be on a certain path, that doesn't mean I'm failing at life if I'm not. I guess the same rings true for jobs too!

In this economy, having any job is good. Despite it being hard to ignore pressures from society about what you "should" do as an adult, whether it's jobwise, lifestyle, hobbies, etc., I feel it's better to do so.
I do agree with all everyone above says, live your life by your own terms and do what makes you happy.

I am definitely beginning to understand that! <3 For some dumb reason, I'm always caught up in thoughts of, "But what will people think of me if do or don't do this!" I guess it's also hard when you see people your age living the life you thought you would when you were younger. But I'm tired of sacrificing my own happiness to pursue a job (or whatever it may be) just because it's what I should be doing.
