joyful_molly kicked this off by posting a resource about the punishment of sodomy in the Royal NavySince between the two of us we could open a private RN library, and since I know how much I appreciate being fed interesting morsels without having to read a 700-page monster (or to pay for that big bad book), I thought I'd share excerpts from some of the books I ( Read more... )

Excellent! :-D I really have to add a little online library to JM, as a resource list. Thanks for your work putting this together, VERY helpful! :D

Indeed it would be great if one could have easy access and the possibility to quickly search the books available... I really wish I had all those books in ebook format too. ;)
And I'm glad it helps (if only to lengthen your list of reasons for disliking certain flogging captains)! *g*

If I do an independent study at college, I was thinking of writing a paper on homosexuality in the Royal Navy. I'm going to have to look up the one with the officers being condemned.

That one book is a biography of Horatio Nelson, so there's not much about homosexuality in the RN at all. Just two or three short paragraphs when it's relevant for the career of Lord Nelson or if the examples shown are particularly interesting. So I'm not sure this is really a book that would be useful for your paper.
Better look into those books joyful_molly had excerpts of at her LJ... :)

Ah, that's great. I had wondered about this, too.
Thank you for sharing.

As I'm currently writing some Lt. Greitzer/Lt. Groves fic in which punishment is a bigger part, this comes in handy. :)

Very very very interesting. Thanks for posting. I've been trying to decide whether to buys some books on the RN in the 18th century, and I think you just made up my mind for me :)
I especially enjoyed your annotations :)
