RN resource: Discipline and Punishment in the RN

joyful_molly kicked this off by posting a resource about the punishment of sodomy in the Royal NavySince between the two of us we could open a private RN library, and since I know how much I appreciate being fed interesting morsels without having to read a 700-page monster (or to pay for that big bad book), I thought I'd share excerpts from some of the books I ( Read more... )

Gah! Leaving books behind must be really cruel. Not sure I could do it...

Very, very interesting ! Thank you for posting these excerpts. These are definitely must-have books.

I'm currently reading James Cook's Journals of his first voyage with the Endeavour, and he too was one who, althouth not refraining from punishiment, resorted to it only when it was strictly needed.

In the navy as a whole only two officers were condemned to death for sodomy during these wars;
Wich confirms that, all in all, you *could* be a RN officer and have a homosexual relationship, provided you were cautious enough and avoided doing it on the long nines *G*
