Sometimes, life isn't fair.

Sherry, who has been leading my Thursday night Weight Watchers meetings at the Concord center since I joined up almost a year ago, has been forced to retire. Her replacement, Jean, informed us of this fact last night. (I'm just glad that she's been replaced by Jean, whom I adore, if she had to be replaced at all. My heart goes out to her; that kind of choice is never easy.

My aunt had nodes on her voicebox and vocal cords several years ago. She was working for Disney at the time and her workers' comp paid for surgery to remove them. She spent a year nearly mute, another couple of years rather hoarse, but in recent years she joined a choir and is back to full vocalizations...even if she is a tenor, now.

Hopefully, Sherry will have such good luck.

What was it that gave her the nodes? Is she just overusing the voice? In that case, before surgery, I would certainly try extended vocal rest and vocal therapy first (to learn to use the voice properly so the problem doesn't reoccur). From what I know, nodes can be fixed, over a lot of time and with patience, without surgery for most people.

Oh, and also, even if she DOES get the surgery, she will STILL need the therapy or the nodes will just come back again.

That's awful. I'm a singer...nodes scare the shit out of me. However, you can have them removed. It's painful, from what I hear, and it may leave you a little breathy-sounding, though. I hope she will not have to got hat route. Good luck to her.
