Sometimes, life isn't fair.

Sherry, who has been leading my Thursday night Weight Watchers meetings at the Concord center since I joined up almost a year ago, has been forced to retire. Her replacement, Jean, informed us of this fact last night. (I'm just glad that she's been replaced by Jean, whom I adore, if she had to be replaced at all. I could have been much, much, much worse.) Sherry, an incredibly gregarious, articulate and talkative woman who genuinely enjoys discussing and debating the world around her, has been diagnosed with nodes on her vocal chords and voicebox.

According to Jean, the doctors gave her a choice. She could keep living life as she always has, or she could change things completely, and continue to have a voice.

I think she's making the right choice -- who wants to be the Little Mermaid? -- but it's horrible that she has to make that choice at all. Sometimes, life simply isn't fair about the way it goes about doing things. I mean, seriously. Uncool.

Poor Sherry.
