1. Doomsday is absolutely, positively, inarguably everything I really want a non-horror movie to be. Seriously, it rocked me from here to Sunday, and I may try arm-twisting people into going with me again tomorrow, because it made me so happy ( Read more... )

Oh my gods, Bureau 13? I've been looking for anything about Bureau 13 for years, ever since I read the story Mercedes Lackey wrote that's roughly a crossover with Bureau 13 and her Diana Tregard books.

What on earth is it? Is it a series of books? I heard something about a role-playing game of it, but never heard anything after that.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but it's been driving me crazy for years not to know anything about it.

Well, it's two things, really...

See, there's Bureau 13: Stalking the Night Fantastic, which is a very serious setting with some awesome random encounter tables; it could easily be used as the backdrop system for, say, a Torchwood RPG. I respect its existence, but dislike the game mechanics enough to not be a huge fan.

It's also a book series by the woefully under-appreciated Nick Pollotta. The first three books were published like ten years before the latter two, which I haven't actually read -- but I love that original trilogy like burning. They're titled Bureau 13, Doomsday Exam, and Full Moonster, and if you like gonzo wacky horror/comedy with aliens and magic and weirder things, I can't recommend them enough.

The siamese cat with his entire body draped over my left arm even as I type this sends his love and admiration to your siamese cat. I am certain they are telepathically linked. All siamese cats are. That is how they keep the monkey servants in line.

Exactly why I love my mutt cat. Except he's a Devon Rex mutt. He's such a damn dog, it's not funny. And the fingers. If he ever develops opposable thumbs, I'm screwed.

Dude! I walked out of that movie going "I don't think I've had this much fun watching a movie in years." It was, simply put, awesome.

And I /liked/ the guy's other movies, so I had high hopes. And even those hopes were blown out of the water.
