thinking, Ajanta

So the caves at Ajanta. For almost 1000 years they were "lost" in an isolated gorge in the arid dry countryside of Western India. Then in 1819 a British officer on a tiger hunt walked over the gorge ridge and "re-discovered" them. Could you imagine that parties surprise?

for the monks and artisans, i think it was meditative approach to art. to make something they love so beautiful that people throughout time..are awestruck by it.

more importantly, if it was on a trade route as you say, for the buddhist/jain/hindu kings, it would be a great opportunity to spread the concept to far away lands through traders. they could tell of a glorious land with immense, unbelievablely beautiful structures, carved right out of the rock.

but i know you ask the questions rhetorically.

Yes you have to do South India next trip! The difference is South India is way more laid back yet has AMAZING stuff to see just like the North. Just watch my pics, and I only went to a half dozen of the 500 spectacular places.

Do you ever go to the NAZ8 Cinema in Artesia?

I go to the naz8 in Fremont all the time to see bollywood movies. Seeing Rani and SRK and Abhishek and Shilpa Shetty on the big screen is a must!

Over via rojagato (although I find it a little ironic that you and I are both in CA and I will shortly be moving back to MA) and just wanted to say that I love your pictures! One of my favorite books is The Ajanta Caves by Benoy K. Behl. It's great to have the additional reference of your pictures, as so many of the photos in his book are chopped up in to sections. It's great to get the whole picture...literally!
I'm incredibly jealous. I really hope to go to Tamil Nadu someday, but with me about to re-enter school I doubt it will happen soon. Ah well! Before I die, at least.
