So the caves at Ajanta. For almost 1000 years they were "lost" in an isolated gorge in the arid dry countryside of Western India. Then in 1819 a British officer on a tiger hunt walked over the gorge ridge and "re-discovered" them. Could you imagine that parties surprise?

more importantly, if it was on a trade route as you say, for the buddhist/jain/hindu kings, it would be a great opportunity to spread the concept to far away lands through traders. they could tell of a glorious land with immense, unbelievablely beautiful structures, carved right out of the rock.
but i know you ask the questions rhetorically.

Yes you have to do South India next trip! The difference is South India is way more laid back yet has AMAZING stuff to see just like the North. Just watch my pics, and I only went to a half dozen of the 500 spectacular places.

I'm incredibly jealous. I really hope to go to Tamil Nadu someday, but with me about to re-enter school I doubt it will happen soon. Ah well! Before I die, at least.
