thinking, Ajanta

Feb 24, 2006 20:03

So the caves at Ajanta. For almost 1000 years they were "lost" in an isolated gorge in the arid dry countryside of Western India. Then in 1819 a British officer on a tiger hunt walked over the gorge ridge and "re-discovered" them. Could you imagine that parties surprise?

Started 2200 years ago, Ajanta seems almost like a mythical site. What possessed people to spend 100s and 100s of years creating such a place?

Was it all planned from the start? Or a haphazard assemblage?

Who painted these masterpieces 1500 years ago?

When the concept or need of the individual artist didn't fit into the creative consciousness?

And the viewer's experience was transcendent over rational,

And why does everything seem to fit perfectly, all it its right place?

????????????????
