So, I actually ended up grabbing another viewing of Star Trek last night (I don't think that I've ever watched a movie three times in its opening weekend) and wanted to share additional squee and thoughts.
seriously, dude, I was already excited to see this movie. I'm chomping at the bit for someone to go with me, and you have made it worse. I'm kinda mad at my dad cause he went to go see it without me, but I've been instructed to call him when I plan to see it so you he can come.
I tried to convince him that my mother would love to see it on Mother's day but he didn't think that was the case.
I cannot wait to take my kids to see it later this week. I want my daughter to see Sulu being awesome with his fencing training and Uhura being brilliant and I just KNOW my son will pretty much worship Kirk. :D
It's such a good movie. I just want to put it on repeat and watch it over and over (and see how long it takes before the first ten minutes stop making me cry!).
I so want to see it again, but between a 3 1/2 year old and 2 month old I won't unless I take them with me and become That Person to the other theater goers (along with exposing my son to too much violence for his age, although I'm sure he'd love it and start shooting Romulans around every corner of the house...).
I love that every single member of the crew contributes to the ultimate success of the mission and all in ways that affirm their value in where they're placed on the crew.
Yeah I thought it was great that it really was a group effort that showcased all the things that made the TOS crew work so well together, just... earlier than in the original timeline. I did kind of feel as if Kirk and Spock were the main emotional arcs of the movie while everyone else was a little more supporting, but other than McCoy that was kind of true in TOS anyway - and when the "support" people are that awesome it's pretty cool.
In this timeline, Kirk never knew Gary MitchellI just thought that this morning. That maybe Gary even died as a

Yeah, exactly. The main emotional thrust of the movie did seem to be getting this Spock and different Kirk to be on the same page by the end.
What body language are you seeing that says they aren't? I didn't get a real sense of romance between them, but that they had a sexual relationship and a whole lot of respect for each other.
Nothing in their body language implied to me that they did have a sexual relationship. Whereas I felt there was a marked difference in their body language after the kiss and especially after Spock had spoken to his father about his mother and his dad basically gave him

Part of it is that I can't imagine that instructor/student relationships are allowed at Star Fleet and can't imagine Spock being the guy who does the shady relationship thing. This aspect bothered me a lot, definitely. I mean, I did perceive them as in a sexual relationship prior to the kiss in the turbolift and as such I wondered how that was permitted. I just thought that somehow it happened after he taught her in a course or something, so they weren't together as a student/teacher but got together after it became kosher - although him having control over assignments makes even that power dynamic problematic. So I definitely see your point

Well, I totally believed that she could have had a pre-existing attraction to him and acted on it in a moment of compassion. Or that there was low-level flirting between the two of them even, with the understanding that it might become more if things became ethically viable. Full-blown romantic relationship isn't someplace I can personally go.
... I think that the movie still makes sense on a basic plot level either way and that it's all subtext before the kiss, so it's a very YMMV on the characterization issues.
Of course, the same argument plus a season goes for Chekov, but he's so firmly identified as part of the core crew that it would have been hard for them to leave him off, even if it technically doesn't make as much sense as it shouldWell, I personally just waved it off by saying that anyway, all their lives were changed by the events with the Kelvin - maybe Chekov was impressed by that story and decided, at an even younger age, to join Starfleet? Technically, I don't think Enterprise was *this* new either when Kirk became captain, I think there was supposed to be another crew for more or less lenghty period of time before, so that's changed as well

'Yes, I believe you are', I went 'oh, he's so whipped'
Hee! I did that as well. Cracked me up. The whole audience (well, the few dozen or so people at our showing at least) roared with laughter at that moment.
As for Spock/Uhura - the moment she went 'I'm assigned to the Enterprise' and he changed it on his pad and went 'Yes, I believe you are', I went 'oh, he's so whipped', so I knew from there they were in a relationship. From then on, it was basically the looks they shared that seemed obvious for me that if they were not in a romantic relationship, at least they were close.
See, if they are in a relationship at that point, then that feels like an abuse of it to me, which doesn't feel true to either of their characters. If they aren't, then it just feels like she's pwning him with her obvious awesome. I can only respect them if they aren't yet in a relationship, I guess.
(and, of course, YMMV and whatnot. It just works a lot better for me, characterization-wise, if the first overtly romantic move in their relationship is the moment in the turbolift)
I don't see it that way - Spock assigned her elsewhere so that it wouldn't look like he's giving her an unfair advantage ('I thought it might appear as though I was biased' or something of the sort), she pwned that logic with the sheer awesome of her logic. I sort of call it logic foreplay, which feels true to their character and would definitely turn Spock on *coughs*.
I would only see it as abuse of a relationship if she didn't belong on Enterprise and used her relationship with him to get in, but she got in by showing how it was the more logical choice. Showing superior logic in order to convince someone, not through lying or manipulating, I would think, is just a normal part of a relationship with a vulcan.
God. Can you imagine how big Kirk's head would get if Spock Prime told him he beat his own record as youngest starship captain? Man. This thought has amused me greatly over the last couple of days. :-) (Also I'm thinking part of the reason they named him captain is because of how many people and starships they just lost at Vulcan.)
I'm still apparently really not picking up on whatever body language some people see with Spock and Uhura (and am seeing body language that they aren't) because that kiss in the lift has still really struck me as feeling like a 'first time' sort of kiss
I guess I'm stuck on not being able to believe that Spock would let her touch him like that unless they had a previous relationship beyond professor and favored student. *shrug* That, combined with Uhura confronting him about needing to be on the Enterprise read very much like an established relationship to me

Hee. He's cocky enough as it is.

But that makes it feel like an abuse of their relationship. I just... I really can't respect the characters as much if it's supposed to be an established relationship.
I mean, if their relationship starts in the turbolift, then I'm okay with it. Starting before then just bothers me on several levels.
But then I think I'm multi-shipping New Trek: I'm all for a) Uhura/Spock, b) Kirk/Spock, c) Kirk/McCoy, d) Kirk/Uhura/Spock, e) Kirk/Spock/McCoy ... etc. :-D
Pretty much the entire cast has chemistry together. I throughly approve of that.
