If you think that anyone can be guilty of making a racist comment or performing a racist act, including you, and that you are willing to take ownership of your statements and actions, resist blaming the person who was offended, figure out why they were taken as racist, apologize, and not do it again, post this exact sentence in your journal.

Cut to save screen real-estate, but please read it anyway. This is serious stuff to me )

That's really interesting. I use "you people" all the time. I wonder if it's a sign of our times that no one looks at me the way you were looked at in high school. But I have to wonder now, when I say it in a mixed group, are there some that think I'm talking about them as a racial segment? If no one says anything, is it understood that I'm talking to a bunch of fellow geeks who should just really appreciate my humor since I'm a goddess anyway ( ... )

One can hope for improvement over time. But it actually comes in little waves I think, with a few breakthroughs here and there.

I haven't followed much of the recent online kerfuffle on this subject, but this is one of the most cogent and sensible statements I've seen on the whole matter.

There's recent online kerfuffle? I'm just joining my friends in a discussion on the topc. :)

But thank you very much for your comment. I was trying my best not to be a babbling idiot.

I am racist. Not many people believe, but I am. I don't want to be and I get on my high horse when people make stupid comments like "That black guy talking to that girl" (why can't it just be a guy talking to a girl or a black guy talking to a white girl?), but I just can't help but think that to combat racism, we ought to combat our own shortcomings.
