I went and changed my name first, then went to the DMV... take your marriage certificate everywhere you go with that kind of stuff, just in case. You never know when it'll be asked for. Didn't need an appointment to change my name and it was relatively quick. They have to mail the new card to you, they won't give it to you on the spot. It can take a couple weeks.

depending on your zip code where you go for social security-- it doesn't hurt to have an appointment. You can get one online or you can just go in and expect a wait. When you apply they'll take your card and send you a new one in the mail in about a week (or 2). Congrats!
