No, it's against all city ordinances to have farm animals within city limited unless it's grandfathered in such as the horse stable on Great Arrow Drive.

Rabbit hutches are illegal as well, just because nobody complained don't mean they're legal. If an inspector ever catches wind of farm animals, you'll be fined up your ass.

Chances are, if you don't leave near a multiple dwelling (3+ units) you may be safe since multiple dwellings get inspected once ever year or so. Your neighbors could also blow you in.

wow...really? i didn't know that about the rabbits...we only had two, and they were indoor/outdoor...not like breeding stock or anything. does that make a difference?

thanks for the answer. i won't say anything about the neighbors, but that's good to know. :)

I'm fairly sure it makes no difference, just no farm animals. The rabbits you can probably get away with as domestic pets, but chickens, no way.

I deal with the building inspectors a lot, and I wanted to get a chicken and he pretty much said exactly what I did.

Hmm... We've got a pot bellied cat, but haven't had any problems outside of a lack of cat food..

I have nothing to contribute other than jumping in to say I caught the Aqua Teen reference in the subject line. Good work.

Ohh chickens. I had chickens as a kid. They're quite nice to have. But you have to be so careful of raccoons, who are clever and will find ways to sneak into your chicken coop and eat your little darlings. A family friend keeps chickens in his tiny backyard in downtown Troy, NY, quite productively. But I don't think you can have them in Buffalo. It would be hard not to get caught because to ensure good laying you need a rooster, and roosters will not shut the hell up. Ever. You can hear them for a quarter mile or more.

Actually we're working on getting the laws changed so as to permit hens like other pets (though with some restrictions). Been assembling chicken laws from around the country and going over what would be a reasonable proposal. Heard that there's already some folks on the common council interested, it just has never been brought up.

If that works out we'll be setting up a hen club to do education and inspection classes.

Roosters are going to be right out of the question, there isn't a city that allows them due to noise. As a result, meat production isn't going to be encouraged, but we're aiming to get culling permitted for the promotion of healthy flocks.

If you would be interested in helping, we'll probably try and get together pretty soon to go over the research and plot the presentation to the city out. Probably meet over at Nickle City or something.

Yeah! Fresh Eggs!

Really there's no good reason why we shouldn't be allowed to keep hens.
