The whole language of Jackie's disinterest really bothers me. She says things like he's saying things 'dully' or with boredom and none of that registers with her. It reads that he isn't having the slightest bit of fun but Jessi just barrels ahead and does what she wants. It's really disheartening that they treat kids like amusing little toys and never get called out on it.

The BSC would have hated me too because I was the same way. I'm an only child so I was used to playing by myself and keeping quiet. I could see that some of their projects might interest me (art and quiet things) but generally I preferred to just do my own thing. And yes, that includes watching the Devil's Box.

I feel really bad about Jackie at the science fair. He was basically humiliated. That's a hard thing for a kid. I totally agree that he should have talked to his parents about letting the BSC sit for him. Kids do pick up on their elder's emotions and I'm sure acting like him tripping is on par with him destroying a priceless antique isn't good for him. It
