Super Special #11 The Baby-sitters Remember - Jessi

Prologue/Kristy

And onto Jessi’s story... I’ve always hated her handwriting, because it’s so damn loopy and swirly. Though if you asked the writer, I probably hate her handwriting because she’s black.

For a little kid, you made an awfully big change in my life. )

I used to not read Jessi's writing as a kid, because it annoyed me. Also, I'm racist, I guess.

Me too! It would take me so long to decipher it I just couldn't be bothered.

Sigh. And I've always thought the Ramseys were the best BSC parents... but seeing this, I wonder...

Keep it up, this is very funny and very cool :)

I was 9 when my mom had my brother, so I kind of get where Jessi's coming from with this one.

And the "F**K SCIENCE" pics cracked me up.

Exactly! But hopefully your parents had the sense to talk to you about it, and explain things and help you understand.

My aunt and uncle had another baby when their son was eight, and they sat down and talked to him before they even got started, and explained that they wanted to try to have another baby, and that they wanted him to be a big brother, and that he could talk to them about how he felt about it any time and they'd listen, sort of things.

Maybe the Ramseys didn't want to get too attached by knowing the gender this time around? Either way, it's really weird that it didn't specify. Also, Jessi trying to decide how much "big underwear" to pack never fails to crack me up. Does Mama Ramsey have a bit of a booty going on?

There are a lot of couples even today that choose not to know the gender. Maybe she wanted to be surprised.

Right, which is cool. It just seems odd to me with them wanting to know before and finding out and all. Otherwise, I totally agree. I've had several cousins go that route and it resulted in them getting gender nuetral clothes and toys that weren't stereotyped, which was awesome.

I suppose it's possible. It just struck me as odd that Jessi specifically mentioned how the first baby was a boy, and the second was a girl, but Squirt is unknown until he's born. A young reader probably coasts over it (I know I did when I read these books before), but to an older one it raises a LOT of questions.

Wow. I never realized how effed up the whole 'premature baby going home after 2 days' thing was in this book. Guess I never paid attention. Being an extremly premature baby myself (3 1/2 months early), I was in the hospital for months. Then I had all sorts of crazy monitors. Did Ann M. Martin write the premise of this book and had the ghosties write it? I haven't read this book in awhile.

As far as the whole knowing the sex when miscarrying thing, they can do genetic tests to see if there were any abnormalities and they can usually find out the sex of the baby then. [nitpick] gender is a social construct...sex is the scientific one [/nitpick]

It is weird that they don't have clothes for the baby when the baby is due next month. I get being gun-shy about it and everything but....come on. They'd more than likely passed the point where they lost the other two babies. You can't just make him wear Becca and Jessi's hand me downs.

The kid is nicknamed "Squirt" hasn't he suffered enough??

That's true. It's easy to forget that these books were supposed to be in the late 80s or whatever. I would imagine that most of the people wouldn't know what they were having.

From my original reading of it I still felt like they lost the other two well before the 8 month mark so maybe that's why I figured they'd at least have some clothes for the kid. As I said earlier, haven't read this book in awhile.

That whole chapter was a big mess, if you think about it. Children wouldn't notice it but when you read it later on...yeah. There's a LOT of heavy things in this.

Sorry if my earlier post offended anyone. It wasn't my intention. :)

How premature was Squirt? I don't think it's so out of the ordinary these days for a baby to go home after 2 days. My friend just had a baby 16 days early and was out in 2 days.
