Okay, so! I hadn't read this one before. And I actually like it better than some of the ones I remembered loving as a kid, because it's Claudia before she was turned into an appalling caricature. That said, it's kind of depressing and the subplot could also be entitled "how not to be an adoptive parent." Let's go straight to the snark.
