Help?

Someone near and dear to me is planning a con, and he asked me to leverage the power of the internets to assist in the planning process. So if you have the time and desire to tick the tickyboxes below regarding your con-going habits and preferences, I would very, VERY much appreciate it. (And feel free to pimp this poll as well, if you want ( Read more... )

I didn't answer this one because I honestly wasn't sure what it meant:

Would you be more inclined to attend a fan con with
- More content in a smaller selection of tracks
- Less content in a larger selection of tracks

I'm also not sure what 'hands-on' activities are; I thought they were gaming or costume-making type things, but you have gaming later.

Good question! It means, basically, would you be more inclined to attend, say, a steampunk/zombie con, where there was more programming for each of those, or a steampunk/zombie/comic/sci-fi con, where there was less programming for each of those. As an example. (Obviously it's somewhat dependent on your interest in each of those things, but. In general.)

And yeah, I think the theory on the hands-on stuff is making costumes, props, etc..

Personally - and I know this is perverse, but what can I say, I qualify - I go to cons primarily for the people.

That's really good to know! Actually, that's kind of the general sense that I'm getting from people's responses, which--as a tangentially interested observer--kinda makes me feel great about the world and fandom, actually. ♥ (I realized yesterday we should have put "seeing friends" as an actual option on the poll, but by then it was too late. /o\)

I wonder if location might not also be a factor. Seattle, Boston, DC...those are all places people might actually choose to go for various recreational reasons, fannish and otherwise. Whereas I suspect I could host a bandom con in Workville and have seats to spare, just because Workville is no vacation spot, lemme tell you, and also the town fathers [sic] would probably have a collective stroke. (Hm. That might actually be an incentive to do this, even though I would not be a good bandom con planner at ALL.)

I totally agree that location is a factor. I mean, if you're not really planning to leave the con hotel, it might not matter much, but if you'd like to get some vacationing in, sure. Also proximity is a factor, for me anyway--part of the reason I'm not really planning on going to Dragon*Con again is that it was so friggin' expensive for me to get there. For me, anyway, my decision to go to a con is usually some combination of location (and overall expense), other people who are going, and my level of interest in the con subject.

And HEE, you should have a bandom con! It would be like Footloose, only with more porn!

Yes, like Queue, mainly I just want to see friends and share the con experience, whatever it is, with them. Sort of like going to Ren Faire or amusement parks with my friends as a child -- it wasn't about the shows or rides themselves, it was about making an event of it for the group of us ( ... )

I don't know what tracks are, so I'm not answering the poll, but:

- I don't like too many things to be happening at once, because that just means I'm missing more stuff!

- Being monofannish, I want there to be at least some reflection of my interests, but I don't expect a lot. (I've solved this at get/together by making sure I always do at least one pimp/presentation.)

- I mostly go for the people.

Get/together doesn't really run things in parallel, except that we do have different lunchbreaks scheduled for RPSers and FPSers, so that we can give the RPSers room to do their thing. We watch an episode of a "classic" slashy show during the RPSers' lunchbreak.

I don't know if any of this is relevant. Hai!

Also congrats on your promotion! (I totally read the post after this before I saw this...flist fail, Skye).

Also, as someone who's only gone to ONE con (Wow, FAIL again), I can say I'm totally in it for the people (well okay for the person in torra's case, but now that I've been to BP, I would totally go back to see EVERYONE...and hopefully for cupcakes ^_^).
