Good luck with the running! I'm a fan of the Galloway method, myself. Anything to protect the knees and hips.

I really enjoy my shuffle (particularly when it's not set on "shuffle" mode). Screen is not necessary. Just put it in my shirt pocket, use in-ear buds (I have this pair made by a company called "Denon" where the left-ear wire is shorter than the right, and the right one basically just passes under the chin to minimize wireage) and it's music out of the thin air without a lot of mechanical noticeably wiry stuffage.
