I've been studying a foreign language with someone I met through gumtree a few weeks ago. She's been in the UK longer than I have, but asked me this today: How do you make friends in UK (specifically England ( Read more... )

Same. Music groups, sports, Red Cross. Join a group and be really open with the people in it.

Ditto met my best friend at the local metalsmithing group. We were both in our 30s too.

Perhaps it depends how you define friends?
I've lived all my life in the UK and have hordes of acquaintances, but I'm really fussy about whether I call someone a friend.
To me, friendship has to stand the test of time

There are LJ groups that have like meet ups and such. Esp if your interest is in Japanese (I just looked, I had tooo!!!!)

I suppose it's just looking for them and getting to know what those groups are about. If your into the whole Japanese things London MCM Expo is great!

ERm, yeah now I'm totally making no sense!

Yeah, my friend is Japanese. :) I'll ask her if she wants to do that, but she's not on livejournal. (That I know of.)

Mostly the English make friends within their social groups - which means school/university, work and church - only the latter if which is really available to people who've not grown up here (parish churches run a lot of secular social clubs which are a good way of getting to know the local community (even in cities) even for atheists).

Other social groups can be contacted through local libraries.

Or you could get a dog...

ETA I forgot Sport - playing is linked to school, but you normally inherit your football club allegiance from your parents.

She's only going to be here another couple of months, I don't think she wants a dog -- but it's a good idea. :) She also seems to have some sort of... physical limitation (like a limp) so I'm not sure if sports are good, but I'll tell her about the libraries thing. That one's good -- my old library back where I used to live always had tons of stuff.

If she's in Tamworth it's worth looking at the council website for social groups and events.

There's a Heritage Open Day this weekend (12th September) which is bound to have some people interested in art involved - again, the library's a good starting point.

If she lived in London it would be so much better. ;-; But she lives in Tamworth.

Heck, I think if I lived in London that'd be great too.
