I just thought I'd wear Nicky for a while. *vbeg* Oh, that didn't come out the way it should have, but it sounds so fun I think I'll leave it that way. :D ( Read more... )

Pretty icon!

I like to think not really knowing what you want to do when you grow up until later is actually more the norm than knowing. I still don't know, though I sometimes have this very weird, strong yearning to get up and go to work as a mechanic all day instead of to an office. Preferably, the shop would be my own.

It's weird, because I know nothing about cars or running a business but would like to do both.

Well, there's two things I keep coming back to, the two things I've wanted to be since I was about ten years old - a writer and a teacher. Over the years, the "teacher" thing has evolved and refined itself until I specifically I want to an English Lit professor. The problem with that is the AA in Lit I have right now is a far cry (time and finance-wise) from the PhD I need. And as for the writer thing... well, I'm just not all that good at it. Not good enough to ever make money at it, at any rate ( ... )

I think that's probably true. More people have said that to me from all age groups than not. I've only known a few people who, say, always wanted to be a nurse or a doctor or something like that *and* were driven to actually succeed. Most of the people I know who are nurses sort of fell into it because of circumstances.

And...I have no idea why I'm suddenly talking about nurses. I can't think of any profession I would like less. I'd rather be a garbage man (woman *g*).

{{{hugs}}} I know we don't talk much except for random LJ posts here and there, but it's nice to hear what you've been doing and that you've been (sort of?) enjoying your summer. :-)

I can so relate to this:

What do I want to be when I grow up? You know, the stuff that most people figure out when they're 18 that I still haven't managed to line out for myself at 34.

Well, except that I'm 46 now. I feel like I'm 17 all over again and have to figure out a brand new plan for my life. It's a little scary and sometimes a little depressing (for me). If you figure it out, let me know. *g*

It is ok not to have all the answers. I'm 45 and am looking to start a new career. I'm going through alternative certification to be a teacher. Think about that. No, I'm not going to be qualified to be an English Lit Prof but I can begin honing my teaching skills, work on further degrees while I'm employed, and keep trading up on the ol' job situation until I am fully qualified to teach at that level.

I'll be 41 soon and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. :) I like what I'm doing now although it won't last much longer. I enjoy my hobbies, but ya know, I have no idea what I'd like to do professionally.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be an astronomer. I couldn't read enough books on the subject. Then, I found out it was 9 years of college in another state, and we were rather strapped for cash, and then there was that big emphasis on math which I'm not too good at....

If I knew at 18 what I know now, I'd probably be studying the standing stones in Europe. :)
