A lot of people arn't feeling Halloween this year. I'm starting to get excited but it still isn't much.
The evil aspect doesn't effect me as much as it use to. Maybe I'm just numb to that sort of thing. In LA its just an excuse to party, but where I spent my high school years, you'd have idiots handing out bible and christian stuff on Halloween and preaching about the evils of Halloween.
The original meaning of Halloween seems to be lost in tackiness, just as most other festivals have been hijacked. I intend to have a private moment of reflection on the coming darkness in private later tonight. I'm thankful that at least the solstices have been left untouched by the media. As for the reluctance in telling people you are a witch that is understandable; I'm sure we have an inbuilt sense of protection brought about by centuries of persecution and are wise to keep our own counsel. I live in Essex in the UK where many people were put to death during the Essex Witch Trials. I have visited the castle dungeons where many were imprisoned. Reading about those murders fills me with horror and a certain amount of fear, as if it could all happen again should the tide turn. So though I will hand out sweets to the children knocking on my door (I've already had 4 lots of callers this evening) and have posted a silly pumpkin on my LJ, I shall remember those innocent lives lost, remember that evil does exist in the world (Matthew

i find all the 'halloween is evil' stuff weird and annoying...my mom's a first grade teacher, and apparently a few of her kids' parents have said that the kids can't participate in the halloween activities (which are fall-type stuff like pumpkin carving, collage-making, which yes, has a few skeletons and stuff, but really...). they're not jehovah's witnesses and participate in other holiday stuff, just not halloween. people need to lighten up in general. i don't really agree about the role of christianity, largely because i don't really know of *any* early xtn. things blasting halloween practices specifically, and alot of halloween practices actually arose out of a christian tradition (as practices on the eve of all saint's day and folk festivities that occurred in a totally christian environment). it's really only within very recent years that the religious right has chosen to depict halloween itself as something evil, not christianity in general and certainly not christianity that far back. just a distinction, but i really hope

*nods* I also agree that the religious nutcases preaching against Halloween are more recent. I am glad that not all Christians think this way, thank the gods!
*Hugs* I Know What You Mean! Tris And I Are Having A Private Samhain Too. We'll Be Doing Our Own Ritual And Meditation. We Were Invited To A Big Party But Decided Not To Go At The Last Minute And Just Spend The Evening Alone Together.
