I read somewhere that the foremost horse-riding sacbut player was a personal friend of Dürer's; his tone was alleged to be close to a human voice. Must have had quite the talent, because those early horns sound pretty tinny to modern ears. :)
I've seen those horns at the MFA before. If I am ever convicted of a criminal offense, it will be for breaking into that music room and jazzing around with a priceless sacbut. ;-)
I wanna see the sacbut. Being a trumpet player enamored of the hunt, I love horns. (Then again, I am that weirdo that decided that my General Patton GI Joe action figure should have a cavalry bugle in his display.)
When I read posts like this, I hope that Boston billet opens up. I want to go to the museums and reenactment events.
So many things that have me so envious. I love Durer prints with dogs in them. (doggie..doggie...dogie) I love WWII advertising, propaganda and post cards and of course anything to do with hunting dogs or hunting.
While the manners of the South are nice, I am SO TIRED of hearing about what Regiment of the Civil War Army somebodies great great Grand Daddy fought in when they hear me talk. I tell them my great great Grandfather fought in the 17th Maine Infantry and 1st Maine Heavy Artillery during the Civil War.

I took a picture of one of the horns for you. Will have to get it off the camera when I get home tonight.

That was my feeling on it as well!
And I'm disappointed the website said "send your favorite postcard!" and they offer a selection of..six.

I've been continually delighted with the MFA the past couple of years. I thought I was getting bored with their collections, but apparently not!
