ended up taking bunch of photos of the large number Savonarola chairs (AKA X-chairs) they had scattered throughout the rooms. Because X CHAIRS! *squees* Yeah, I loved those chairs but I never see them for sale for under 400.00.
And when you do find them for under $400, they don't actually fold up the way they're supposed to!
To date, my one regret is that two years ago when I was at ReenactorFest I didn't nail down the antique store where one of the vendors said they'd bought one for $75 (apparently someone had a dining room set with them, so they had something like a dozen for sale, cheap).
The cafeteria is very expensive there and is still the least expensive place to eat there by a wide margin. But, you're right about eating on those steps in that heat...
I thought that can't be right, I know all kinds of people here in the West who have one of those chairs, and I know they didn't pay that much! I did a search and found instructions on how to make them. I do know that some people have bought them from somewhere, I'll have to ask around. I've wanted one since I first saw them, me chair now is similar but a straight x, without a back. My bf said he got them at Pensic one year.
The ones that I want, the Savonarola with lots of spines that actually fold down almost flat, are a LOT of work to make.
The two years I've been to Pennsic, I've seen a few X-chairs for sale. But generally they are 1) very simple 2) very sturdy (i.e. no grace) and 3) made out of pine not hardwoods. Also, they sell before you can blink. I saw one my second year on my way down the street to do something, and by the time I got back it was gone.
