March 8 is International Women's Day (and my birthday which has always delighted my little feminist heart). In the US, the month of March is designated National Women's History Month. In honor of these facts, I've decided to do the 30 Days of Fictional Females meme that I've seen here and there for ages. I won't promise one a day for the month, but I'll give it my best shot and hopefully make up for missed days with double posts and the like.
Also, I'd just like to note up front that looking over these questions makes me realize that some of them will be very difficult to answer. If they were about favorite male whatever, I'd probably have no problem, if for no other reason than there are so many more to choose from. For females, there are some questions about which I'm having to think hard just to come up with an example of one, let alone something I'd call a favorite. Maybe that's just a matter of my personal tastes, but I doubt it. Thus the need for this meme. I'm going to make it even harder on myself by trying not to duplicate answers too much. So, for example, whoever I put for favorite female lead can't also be favorite female in a sci-fi show or in a book or whatever. We'll see how that goes.
Day One: Favourite lead female character
I've thought about this a lot and, throwing out females that I'm fairly certain I'll use in other places later in this meme, I think I've settled on two answers of lovely females leading their own series. First up is a childhood favorite: Laura Ingalls (Wilder). She was feisty and independent, pushing at the boundaries of her society, she was historical and history has always been cool to me, and I felt as a kid that her life could have been mine if I'd lived when she did. I grew up in Kansas, partly in a basic suburban community and partly in middle-of-nowhere farm country and felt this connection, with lots of jealousy on my end of the huge snow storms she got. I say all this in my power to the women meme thing but honesty forces me to admit that the book about her eventual husband's childhood, Little Farmer Boy, was always my favorite of the series.
A more recent favorite is Thursday Next, star of her eponymous series of books by Jasper Fforde. Thursday is awesome! She's strong and bad-ass and acts as an agent taking on crime in books! She jumps into books! Love books! Of course, one of the things I like best about Thursday is that she gets shit done, but she isn't always strong. She cracks, she leans on others for help, she admits when she makes mistakes. She's human.
