Do you have any family history of bipolar disorder? Certain forms of bipolar disorder result in periodic bouts of irritability rather than bouts of mania or hypomania. It could also be a form of dysthmia tied to changing light patterns or something (every few months - is it generally around when the seasons are changing?).

I think I do, actually - my cousin. Though we sort've assumed it came from her mother's side, not ours... but her father, my mother's brother, is also potentially bipolar... and potentially also my mom's somewhat-estranged(?) sister.
