I don't get self-inserts.  Even when I first started writing pokemon fan fiction at thirteen, I wouldn't even think of inserting myself into a story outside of those stupid author notes I used to do or in parody.  I know there's a little bit of ourselves in original characters (and sometimes canon characters) but to outright name your main ( Read more... )

"Seriously? You want to name your character after your online name?"

You know I think I asked someone why they did this once (I forget who it was) but he said that he didn't name his character after his username, he registered his username after coming up with the story and named himself after the character.

It's still kinda lolwat in my opinion. If I named myself after any of my characters it would feel very awkward. The only time it isn't awkward is when I role-play and make completely separate accounts or make characters in an MMORPG. Even then I usually have to tell people me =/= the character I play ( ... )

"IDK, I used to have self-insert fantasies, but it was nothing I ever wanted to write down and share with the world. Every time I tried writing one it looked and sounded ridiculous to the point where I gave up and said, 'screw this BS I don't want to talk about me anyway'."

That's what I do! I think it's neat to imagine myself in MMORPGs or whatever, but I would feel absolutely ridiculous if I tried to write it down. I mean, I'm boring enough as it is that I can't even properly write a blog entry about it. X3

This makes me wonder if there's a parody story that makes fun of the idea of people using their username as the name of their character. "Turtwigrules04 woke up late today."

Definitely anything would be better than nothing. XP And your reviews are not cruddy (they are the exact opposite of that), so you shush. >( Aren't you taking part in PC's challenge though?

Didn't someone try a parody about the authors of sppf before? I could have sworn there was at least one, but I've lurked there for too many years now and everything is all bungled. Or maybe some just talked about it and it never came to be. Not sure. A pure parody about people inserting their user names though, I have never seen. XD ( ... )

'There are many times where I hit the submit button, and then proceed to wonder if anyone understands what the hell I'm saying at all'

Edit:

Especially when the author simply deletes his/her story after I spent a great deal of time typing up the review. *facedesk*

Yeah, the idea of giving a character your own name weirds me out too. I have written a self-insert of sorts (sort of like me except overly aggressive and violent and insensitive and noted as such by the main character, and subsequently developing to be even more wildly unlike me), but your name just seems like something you can't just transplant onto a fictional character, and trying to ask yourself "What would I do?" about completely alien situations happening to a character in another world who's lived there all their life and had completely different experiences and so on just seems... bizarre.

I enjoy reviewing, but my main problem is my reviews tend to take a long time to write, thanks to overly-detailed-ness and multitasking and so on. I still have a text file on my computer containing a lengthy review of the first chapter of some trainer fic somebody posted a couple of years ago that hadn't even gotten past the second paragraph yet - I always meant to finish it but it ended up just being pretty clear the author wasn't ever ( ... )

Totally agreed. I also don't think I would be able to put the character through certain difficult scenarios if she had my name. It would be awkward at the very least. I don't get how some people are able to do that (if they do it at all).

Yeaaaah, I'm falling into the opposite problem now. I'm starting to pump out reviews relatively quickly that I kind of forgot how to do long, detailed reviews. x_X I also feel ... deflated when I spend a long time on a review and the response to it is lackluster, if that's not too vain to say. But I figure as long as I'm saying something useful and looks like I actually read the story, it'll make the author feel nice.

Judging in contests was a really, really nice experience. Glad you have fun with it. =P If you don't mind me asking, when will the results be posted?

Whenever all the judges have finished. Both purple_drake and I got it done months ago, but Psychic has been crazy busy with school stuff and real life that's been slowing her down (she's pretty close to finishing now but has a pile-up of essays and exams), and though Negrek apparently only has a couple of hours' work left, she has other priorities and said she'd do it when everybody else's reviews are in but would rather spend her time on more important concerns until that time comes.
