I don't get self-inserts.  Even when I first started writing pokemon fan fiction at thirteen, I wouldn't even think of inserting myself into a story outside of those stupid author notes I used to do or in parody.  I know there's a little bit of ourselves in original characters (and sometimes canon characters) but to outright name your main ( Read more... )

I never really used self-inserts either, one roleplay community aside when I was young, though it was less of a self-insert, and more or less me and countless others following the current trend of the community, which was to name your character based off your moniker.

I still have very fond memories of that place, actually.

And it is interesting to look back and see what fanfic was popular back then. I remember Saber's fic vividly. I was always unsure just why she used her name instead of an actual character's name. I could see, however, why her story was so popular, as her style really appealed to a certain crowd. And romance triangles are THE BOMB, apparently. (I personally don't really like 95 percent of them... But that's just me ( ... )

and this one author I can't place the name of, but his version of Snattle (Pokémon Coliseum-verse) was particularly hilarious. (I believe he and his Metagross played golf with a skull; it was priceless.)

That would be ≈*Virulent Tsunami*≈. And yes, that Snattle was glorious. :D

I was just thinking that if anyone remembered his username, it would by you, since you're the one who introduced me to his stuff in the first place.

Snattle, to me, was like an affably evil Willy Wonka... without the chocolate factory or something.

...I suddenly kinda want to see a version of that with every role filled by a Colosseum/Gale of Darkness character. X3

Haha, I remember Saber and Mix's stories. I admit, I used to like them a lot, but now I'm embarrassed being all fangirly and such whenever they posted a new chapter! XD; But yeah, I don't really get the appeal of having the characters be named after your username.

Oi, I really need to get back to reviewing at Serebii. D: Indeed, so many fics being posted/updated, it's hard to catch up. XD

Over the smutty smut fanfic comment, haha same here with the imagery. XD Curious, what's the prompt line? ;P

Oh, I'm not saying it's bad to like their stories or anything. =P I definitely get the appeal for both of those stories. At the same time, it's just really bizarre to me that no one seemed to really question the characters, let alone their names. I probably shouldn't judge considering I never really read both stories and am only going off what I hear from you guys, though. ;P

Definitely, though isn't PC doing another review challenge? XP

And I think you found the prompt line in the club, right? ;)

I do think their stories are good, but I feel silly not realizing the many faults of them until much later. :P Yeah, I didn't think it was unusual they name the characters after their username at the time.

Ack, thanks for reminding me about PC doing another review challenge! XD I think in April I'll be busy doing that, haha. I might try to get in a couple reviews for Serebii, but not sure. I'll be able to on May, though, if real life won't be hectic.

Yeah, just found out the prompt line in the club last night. I so want to try it out, LOL.

Eh, they were written years ago. We grow and learn more. ;)

Good luck on the review challenge! It's fun to watch, haha.

I do, too, but I seriously have no idea what to write for it. x_X

You know, I wish I'd noticed Mix's fic when she first started posting it. I was probably MIA during it, but I would have loved to review the first chapter right after she'd posted it. Would have made things a lot easier, heh.

Ah, before all the fanboys/girls started to gather? ;)

I really dislike reviewing stories that are more than ten chapters in, mostly because you get an excuse in response to your critique. "I'm going to edit it later!" or "Read further and you'll see it changes!"

To clarify that, I do understand that it does take a while to edit back and make all the necessary changes. It's when people use the "I'll edit it later; thanks for the advice!" line to dismiss your points is when I get all rawr.

Well, that too, but also because it'd be at a time that would make it much easier for her to edit. *grin* Lack of over-protective fans would have helped, however. ;)

It's still weird to me, lol. I know I'm biased because I'd rather use canon characters than OCs as my main characters, but ... the name thing is just ... weird.

Haha, awesome. ;P
