PAGING ALL TOLKIEN FANS! Yes, that means YOU!

Feb 25, 2009 21:19

So. There is a person on my flist who is newly arrived into the Weird and Wonderful World that is the online Tolkien fandom. She wants to find her way around the Tolkien-related Intarwebs and meet fellow Tolkien nerds who might be interested in not just discussing the inner workings of The Silmarillion but also share an enjoyment of fanfic, random ( Read more... )

I'll fill out the questionaire later - I need to go to bed! As for links...hmm...off the top of my head there is the Lord of the Rings Fanatics Plaza - a very comprehensive board! I also still frequently check the
Henneth-Announ Story Archive, the Library of Moria, Stories of Arda and of course if you're interested in meta, there's always Michael Martinez ;)

I hope that helps :)

Michael also runs the messages boards at SF-Fandom, including the Tolkien and the Inklings and the newly renamed Middle-earth Movies (formerly LOTR Movies) boards.

Thanks for contributing. :D Do people still post on LoM? It's been YEARS since I last read anything on there, I have to confess.

Favourite Tolkien book: Aheh. Pretty much all of the Middle-earth ones, although there are parts of HoME that I'm not as interested in.

Favourite Tolkien character: Probably either Huan or Finrod.

Favourite Tolkien scene, moment or storyline (if you have one): Oh, too many to name.

Give some brief idea of when you first 'discovered' Tolkien, what his work means to you, what you love about it, etc: Just answered this question hereFavourite moment in the movies: The Party, Rivendell, finding Gandalf again (TTT), "Shall I describe it to you", "I bid you stand, Men of the West," Sam carrying Frodo up Mount Doom, the Grey Havens ( ... )

febobe posts on ff.net and on her LJ, but I don't think she does on SOA. I agree her fic is lovely. :)

Seems like she has in the past, but I don't know if she still does. Thanks for the reminder. :)
Oh, and I forgot dreamflower02! I especially recommend Miss Dora Baggins' Book of Manners, which I've had half a mind to copy out longhand onto parchment just for the fun of it.

There are some truly amazing stories out there! :D And so many wonderful authors too. I did this, even if I'm not active in the LOTR fandom now, but it'll always be with me.

Favourite Tolkien book:

~flail~ I love all I've read, but I really do enjoy rereading Fellowship of the Ring and the Silmarillion.

Favourite Tolkien character:

...all of them? Gandalf is awesome, though, and I have a soft spot for Beleg. I can't really decide which one I enjoy the most. I enjoy all his characters pretty much.

Give some brief idea of when you first 'discovered' Tolkien, what his work means to you, what you love about it, etc:Well, both my parents read them and my brother, I can't recall exactly why I decided to read them. And I have this odd feeling I read the Lord of the Rings before The Hobbit. The very first thing I ever encountered was the animated The Hobbit, but I barely knew what it was at the time ( ... )

Boz's stuff was the last I was reading and now it's finished so there isn't any fanfic I read anymore right now.Is that a hint I should update Moments of Panic? :P But definitely check out the recs coming already in the comments - nearly all of them are ones I would have made.

I was a closeted slasher of just one pairing, who shall remain nameless
*LE GASP* You do realise I shall now poke you mercilessly till you BREAK AND CONFESS ALL, right? ;P

LOL - just checked that 'Canon? No! Fanon!' site and under elves it has listed 'Thranduil has a drinking problem'... *roflmao*

Yes, I'm definitely going to check things out. lol And no it wasn't a hint, but I wouldn't mind at all a little snippet now and again. :D

Meh. Bunker schmunker. That won't save you. :P

Somewhere there is the most extraordinary picture of 'drunk Thranduil'...replete in trousers that are FAR TOO TIGHT. Which would perhaps not be a bad thing but... the whole thing is just very odd.

But better that than the frog in a lopsided hairpiece, I say. :P

Favourite Tolkien book: Got to say LOTR, but I'm starting to poke around through some of the HoME volumes more recently.

Favourite Tolkien character: Probably Halbarad, closely followed by Aragorn.

Favourite Tolkien scene, moment or storyline (if you have one): I love the bits in the Houses of Healing.

Give some brief idea of when you first 'discovered' Tolkien, what his work means to you, what you love about it, etc: Fourth grade. The animated 'Hobbit' was on TV and Dad kept snarking that the book was better. I said 'There's a book?' He let me read it - there was a note at the end that if you wanted to read more, pick up LOTR. And he let me read LOTR, too. They're the first books I really shared with Dad. Silmarillion I read for the first time in 7th grade - my maternal grandfather knew I loved Tolkien and bought it for me for my birthday. He was just sort of starting to get Parkinson's related dementia and didn't remember who I was a year later. I still have that extremely battered copy of the Silm. I love the ( ... )

I'm verbose, so I had to carry this into a second comment:

Fic/author recommendations: Your stuff's not half-bad. ;) Almost anything by shirebound or dreamflower02. A recent find for me were pandemonium-213's stories on SWG - 'The Apprentice' and 'The Elendilmir,' among others. She makes a morally ambiguous Sauron believable and some of the details she includes make my inner science nerd squee. claudia603 writes some wonderful genfic (in addition to the slash and mpreg). baranduin and aprilkat and mews1945 are the queens of interspecies slash, IMO. I'm almost certainly forgetting someone. :)

Website recommendations:
The Last Ship
The Silmarillion Writer's Guild
middleearthnews
Henneth Annun Story Archive
The Thain's Book

What other fandoms do you have? I used to read a fair bit of HP fic - oh, and I used to be quite into ST:TOS and TNG.

Shameless Pluggery And Own Trumpet Blowing Section: All my fic is at surgsteelfic. Some of it's on TLS as well. :)

This has been so interesting to read!!! And thank you so so so so much for mentioning me! It has done my fragile little ego surprisingly good, lol! AND I will make a very full-hearted rec of surgicalsteel's fic here -- it is a masterpiece and very lovingly crafted (even though I'm embarrassingly far behind in catching up right now due to sort of being on an LOTR-reading hiatus!)
