PAGING ALL TOLKIEN FANS! Yes, that means YOU!

Feb 25, 2009 21:19

So. There is a person on my flist who is newly arrived into the Weird and Wonderful World that is the online Tolkien fandom. She wants to find her way around the Tolkien-related Intarwebs and meet fellow Tolkien nerds who might be interested in not just discussing the inner workings of The Silmarillion but also share an enjoyment of fanfic, random ( Read more... )

LJ user name: ramblin_rosie; aka San Antonio Rose (that's my FF.n username) and Rose Bexar

Favourite Tolkien book: Aheh. Pretty much all of the Middle-earth ones, although there are parts of HoME that I'm not as interested in.

Favourite Tolkien character: Probably either Huan or Finrod.

Favourite Tolkien scene, moment or storyline (if you have one): Oh, too many to name.

Give some brief idea of when you first 'discovered' Tolkien, what his work means to you, what you love about it, etc: Just answered this question here.

Favourite moment in the movies: The Party, Rivendell, finding Gandalf again (TTT), "Shall I describe it to you", "I bid you stand, Men of the West," Sam carrying Frodo up Mount Doom, the Grey Havens

Worst moment in the movies: (and, yes, you can have more than one) Frodo in Osgiliath and Iago!Gollum. The destruction of Gandalf's staff is up there, too, but those were the points that really made me mad because they completely change the tragedy of Gollum's storyline.

What are your hopes/fears re. the possible Hobbit movie? (yes, you can take that as your cue to rant about PJ if you want) I haven't been paying attention, but the second proposed movie is the one that worries me more. I'm a little skeptical of Del Toro, too.

Do you or have you ever done Tolkien-related RPGing? No.

Would you be interested in starting up a Tolkien RPG? Not really.

Tolkien macros comm - y/n? Eh...

Do you read/write Tolkien-related fanfic? Yes!

Any favourite Tolkien pairings/genres/settings, either as a writer or reader? Canon pairings, especially A/A, F/E, and S/R; adventure, character studies, gapfillers, certain AUs, some h/c (light on the h, heavy on the c); the Shire, Rivendell, Lorien, Cormallen, Minas Tirith, Tol Eressea.

Where do you tend to read/post Tolkien fanfic? I tend to post on FF.n and my own site, but I mainly read at Stories of Arda.

Shameless Pluggery section: My FF.n profile and the LOTR section of my site.

The things that rile you most in a Tolkien-related fanfic: Bad writing, 'Sues, slash, torture... well, the PPC charge list has most of them.

Fic/author recommendations: Shirebound, Frodo Baggins of Bag End, Lindelea, Larner, Nilmandra, Surgical Steel, Thundera Tiger, Bodldops, and of course our own dear Boz... most of these ladies post at Stories of Arda, but I usually read SSteel's work on surgsteelfic.

Website recommendations:
Ardalambion is probably THE website for all Tolkien languages. Another good Elvish site is Realelvish.net.
Encyclopedias: The Thain's Book and Encyclopedia of Arda
I haven't used this page much in my own fic, but it's still a good resource: Travel Routes and Times in Middle-earth
And for anyone curious about the Protectors of the Plot Continuum: The List of All Things PPC

What other fandoms do you have? Too many to really list; I'm more active in Stargate Atlantis, Monkees, Hogan's Heroes, and A-Team.

Shameless Pluggery And Own Trumpet Blowing Section: My website's main page; all kinds of stuff there, but the fanfic section is what I work on most often now. It houses all my fic, including stuff that FF.n no longer allows. And if you're so inclined, please vote for my story The Scourge in the 2008 Papa Bear Awards.

febobe posts on ff.net and on her LJ, but I don't think she does on SOA. I agree her fic is lovely. :)

Seems like she has in the past, but I don't know if she still does. Thanks for the reminder. :)
Oh, and I forgot dreamflower02! I especially recommend Miss Dora Baggins' Book of Manners, which I've had half a mind to copy out longhand onto parchment just for the fun of it.

There are some truly amazing stories out there! :D And so many wonderful authors too. I did this, even if I'm not active in the LOTR fandom now, but it'll always be with me.

Nicely done, medically accurate h/c. :)

Rosie - where do you get your SGA stuff? I got starting in fanfic with SG1, but the site where I read from seems to have gone defunct (and it's been long enough now I can't even recall the name of the site just now). I'd love to read some good SGA fic.

You read (write?) SG! fic? I even managed that, lol. Where is it if you wrote any?

Never wrote any SG1 fic, but reading it is where I started with READING fanfic, before getting into LOTR. However, I had LOTS and LOTS of wonderful storylines running through my head, and one that was post-"The Entity" that was so thoroughly worked out I probably should have written it.

I think the website where I read it was Stargatefan.net or .com... whatever, and it doesn't seem to have been updated for years now. :(

I know, there are other sites that are more active these days. Like The Alpha Gate, Area 52 (slash), ff.net. I've only wirtten the one story (which actually is an SGA gap-filler, but SG-1 verse, lol), but I'm constantly having half-formed bunnies jumpoing around in my head. If you're interested, this is the third part, with links to the two first parts:http://ansostuff.livejournal.com/421926.html

Mostly from FF.n, but jennytork has some amazing stories--in fact, she was largely responsible for getting me hooked on SGA. I think her site is up to date.

*beams* *huggles you* XD

Oooh, that 'travel routes' site is very useful. WISH I'd had that when I was writing the Panic fics, lol! I was going entirely by guesswork. ¬¬ (Or should I probably not confess that?) LOL!
